An invitation to explore and use our outdoor Prayer Tree! Please join in prayer for our neighborhood, city, and nation by bringing your prayer to the Prayer Tree as we reimagine our worship rhythmsin light of the pandemic. Until Wednesday, July 8, a tree in front of the doors to the education buildingon Christiana Avenue will be set aside for holding the prayers offered by our church and our neighborhood. There will be safety pins available at the tree, so please bring your prayer/s on folded paper andpin it/them to the tree.As we share prayers of lament, hope, and blessing at the prayer tree and in our daily lives, may yoube inspired by this prayer of blessing:May God bless us with a restless discomfort about easy answers, half-truths, and superficialrelationships, so that we may seek truth boldly and love deeply from within our hearts.May God bless us with holy anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people,so that we may tirelessly work for justice, freedom, and peace among all people.May God bless us with the gift of tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, or the loss of all that they cherish, so that we may reach out our handsto comfort them and transform their pain into joy.May God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we really can make a differencein this world, so that we are able, with God’s grace, to do what others claim cannot be done.Let us rejoice together in God’s never-ending love, grace, mercy, and peace; that each prayer we sendto Him will be answered according to God’s will.North Park Covenant Church will be hosting Vacation BibleSchool 2020 VIRTUALLY this year! Some Words on Communion in Your Homeswritten by Doug Bixby and used with permissionThe reason Communion is typically done as a part of the worship service in EvangelicalCovenant Churches, is because it is a sacrament of the church and, to keep things inproper order, clergy ordained to Word and Sacrament are typically the ones who blessthe elements and share them. Most denominations and churches discourage people fromtreating communion as an individualistic experience that can be practiced devotionallyat home. Some virtual churches have also arisen recently, where people attend church as avirtual avatar, or computer robot. Trying to practice virtual communion in these contextshas also been strongly discouraged by various church leaders. The reason for this is thatvirtual community is not human community in the same way we as the church experiences real community in our actual congregations via the body of Christ. Most churches, however, allow Pastors or Deacons to take communion to peoplewho are sick or in hospitals or nursing homes, and unable to attend services. The ideais that by sharing the bread and the cup with these folks it sets them free from personalisolation and helps them to understand that they are able to participate in the broadercommunion of the church through the bread and the cup.Ordained clergy are not, however, in the business of bringing communion out tothose who simply avoid worship attendance because of laziness or apathy, or even hurtfeelings. Nonetheless, we are facing a new challenge with virtual church services beingconducted by clergy and church leaders, while our congregations are unable to meet inperson because of this pandemic. Real people, meeting virtually, because they cannotmeet together because of a pandemic virus is an entirely different set of circumstances. This is not related to laziness or intolerance of people, but a very real set of circumstances, like someone being home-bound due to illness. So, as we celebrate communion during necessary virtual services, we make the specialaccommodation of blessing it from a distance, in the same way that delivering communion to the homebound is a special accommodation for those in need. So, if you are athome and have bread, and grape juice (or even a bit of wine), we should gather theseelements for a Holy Communion Service blessed through this virtual communionservice. Each person should have their own cup and piece of bread. What makes Holy Communion sacred is not the type of plate or cup the fruit ofthe vine and the bread are in. It is not who prays over the elements in person. It is thefact that we set these elements aside for this purpose through prayer and that we do it inremembrance of Jesus and the sacrifice he made through his blood and body.

We welcome all people to begin or deepen their relationship with Christ through worship and study. We invite all believers to fully participate in the life and ministry of our church as members, leaders, and lay staff. We celebrate the gifts and presence of diverse Christians among us—whether thosedifferences be race, ethnicity, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability,or socioeconomic status. We are blessed by our diversity and are unified in Christ.Church StaffLibby Piotrowski, Co-pastorJeff Hunter, Co-pastorlpiotrowski@npcovenant.org, ext. 515jhunter@npcovenant.org, ext. 525To reach both Jeff and Libby, please use copastors@npcovenant.org or ext. 510.Ann-Marie O.
