This is the first Good Design exhibitionin New York. It is the outgrowthof a long development. In 1938 the Museum of Modern Art inauguratedyearly selectionsof the best modern design in home furnishingsavailableto the Americanpublic;twelve years ago the show (calledUseful Ob ects) waslimitedin scope and modestlypresented.Today, a comprehensiveselectionand a fittingpresentationhave become possiblethanks to the generous sponsorshipof The MerchandiseMart, Chicago,a vastbuildingdevotedto housingwholesalecommerce. The products shown here were selected from designs new during the year, for their excellentappearanceand their progressiveperformance.Designersand manufacturershave donated them mostliberally.Retail stores and approximateprices in New York are listed for the convenienceof visitorsto the exhibition. The selectionswere made from the great nationalhome furnishingswholesalemarkets held tnChicago twice yearly.Last winter,Meyric R. Rogers, Curator of Decorativeand IndustrialArts at theArt Instituteof Chicago, and AlexanderGirard, the young architectwho had recentlydirectedthe Detroit Instituteof Arts' first and very successfulshow of modern home furnishings, joined me to formthe first Good Design SelectionCommittee. The articleschosen were placed on displayin a largespace donatedby The MerchandiseMart, Chicago, amid settingsbrilliantlydesignedby Ray andCharlesEames, who came from Los Angeles especiallyfor this. The exhibitionwas embel I ished byimportantworks of art which the Art Instituteof Chicagoloaned for the occasion.Good Design thuswas launched at the core of American commerce. The traders came to see and remained to praise. A newand crucialmarketprovalaudiencewas gainedfor progressiveThe exhibitionremains on viewweeks it is open to the publicmodern design.in The Merchandisewho visit The MartMart, Chicago, throughoutthe year. Afteron guided tours. They too have voiced apthere. For the Summer Market Serge Chermayeff,Directorof the Instituteof Design of IllinoisInstituteof Technology, and BertholdStrauss, one of Philadelphia'smost forward-lookingmanufacturers,servedwith me on a new SelectionCommittee.Good Design doubledin size. Again we found a generous response from visitors.Across the country, retail stores have made feature displaysof the Good Designselections. This intensiveactivityhas, throughout, receivedthe support of The MerchandiseMart underthe leadershipof its owner JosephP. Kennedy, recentlyAmericanAmbassadorto Great Britain. Now a culminatingselectionhas been made to fit the Good Design exhibitionof 1950 into thehallsof the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Ray and CharlesEames have designed new backgrounds for the Museum related to those in Chicago. We hope you will like Good Design. In 1951 wewillrecommencethisyearlyroundof activities.Edgar Kaufmann, Jr.Director,Good Design
