SUpporting acceptance of automated VEhicleIntroduction of the projectThis project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 814999

Introduction While the deployment of connected automated vehicle (CAV) turns intoreality, its acceptance has been called into question for the user awarenessabout the risks of CAV technology and the increase of user scepticismabout ethical aspects. The latest ERTRAC Automated Driving Roadmap ascribe paramountimportance to public acceptance, user awareness, and ethical issuesrelated to CAV. On top of that, gradual deployment of CAV implies that CAVs will co-existwith other road users (vulnerable road users and conventional vehicles) forsome time, making the harmonization and acceptance by other road users aprime subject. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149992

Introduction The latest Eurobarometer report observes that the Member States do nothave a specific policy to enhance public acceptance of CAV. The current approach, based on the technology push, jeopardizes socialviability of innovative technology like CAV, as it creates a gap between thewell-thought technical reliability and public acceptance by failing tointegrate human component in the design process. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149993

Introduction SUaaVE aims to make a change in the current situation by leaning on aHuman-Driven Design (HDD) approach, where the user is not only thecentre of the process but actively contributes and even leads the definitionof concept, development of technology and participates in its testing. SUaaVE will focus on the human side, working to improve more“intangible” aspects as safety perception, attitudes and, in general, emotional appraisal of CAV.This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149994

Project aim SUaaVE proposes to enhance public acceptance of CAVs (L4 ) through:Social-psychological researchon CAV acceptabilityALFRED: concept tohumanise the vehicleactionsCross-cultural frameworkfor ethical and legal issuesImmersive VirtualHuman Centred Design(V-HCD) platformThis project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149995

Project aim Social-psychological research on CAV acceptabilityo Investigate the psychological factors that influence acceptability ofCAV among the different types of road users, such as CAV passengers(e.g. current and not current drivers, children, senior citizens, peoplewith disabilities) and other road users (e.g. pedestrians, cyclist, otherdrivers).o Develop a psychological model depicting the key predictors of publicacceptance for CAV and a protocol for the assessment of all road users’acceptance.o Propose evidence-based mitigation strategies for decision makers thatmight effectively stimulate people towards higher individual andsocietal acceptance of CAV.This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149996

Project aim Generate a cross-cultural framework for ethical and legal issues from CAVdeploymento Propose policy recommendations based on the ethical dimension andthe corresponding legal issues.o Generate ethical principles, which can be integrated in computablealgorithms.o Propose policy recommendations based on The legal rules on consentthrough the principles of contract law and the general data protectionregulation (GDPR).This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149997

Project aim ALFREDArchitecture to understand the emotions of the passengers of the CAV and toadapt the vehicle features to enhance the in vehicle user experience.– “EMpathY” Unit (EmY): Understand the emotional and cognitive state of thepassenger, while taking into account ethical principles.– “Adaptive, Cognitive and Emotional” (ACE) Interface: control strategies forthe management of CAV behaviour. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149998

Project aim ALFRED Empathic module: Investigate and develop a model to monitor andinterpret the passenger stateo Develop an emotional model to monitor in real time thepassenger’s state.o Generate a cognitive model to characterise “drivers” from theperspective of Situational Awareness.o Development of observation algorithms to estimate the emotionalstate of passengers and other relevant individuals, using availablemeasures. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 8149999

Project aim ALFRED ACE interface: Define on-board services to influence on passenger’sstate and improve their experienceo Develop a cognitive smart assistant to increase the SituationalAwareness of the “driver”.o Generate algorithms for adjusting the vehicle dynamics anditinerary for a comfortable and safe ride.o Define guidelines for ambient and postural comfort in CAV.This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 81499910

Project aim Immersive Virtual Human Centred Design (V-HCD) platform Develop with V-HCD platform a simulated version of ALFRED. Provide a final demonstrator for large dissemination of ALFRED toEuropean citizens and stakeholders. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 81499911

Methodology PHASE 1. Social and Behavioural Research on PublicAcceptance and Ethics– Formulate requirements to support CAV acceptance, including ethical and legal issues.– Focus groups, Delphi study, large-scale survey and usertests to assess user behaviour and acceptance levels.– Workshops with stakeholders andadvisory board to understanddifferent perspectives of CAVacceptance. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 81499912

Methodology PHASE 2. ALFRED research, development andintegration– Generation of the different modules of ALFRED.– Development of V-HCD platform. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 81499913

Methodology PHASE 3. User involvement, validation &demonstration– Test and demonstrate the components of ALFREDin the CAV.– Two iteration loops through users: Assessment of ALFRED modules separately. ALFRED modules inter connected. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 81499914

Methodology Participatory process will consist in a survey in six European countries, witha participation of at least 3,900 citizens and at least 100 panelists. The iterative development process will involve participation of 600volunteers in user tests, in five European countries, experiencing withALFRED.This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 81499915

Methodology Advisory Board Mission: Participation in the definition of the requirements for ALFRED,review of Use Cases, assessing SUaaVE results and final SUaaVEdemonstration. Composed by experts in four complementary fields: Europeanautomotive industry, road users associations, other transport sectors;and policy makers. This project has received funding from the EuropeanUnion’s Horizon 2020 research and innovationprogramme under grant agreement No 81499916
