Fall 2016 Program GuideAbout the Lifelong Learning InstituteThe Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI-Manassas) is a membershiporganization managed by and for its members. Our mission is toestablish a community of adults, 50 years of age and older, thatprovides affordable educational and social opportunities in a friendlyatmosphere. We are hosted by Northern Virginia Community College(NOVA)-Manassas Campus.We offer daytime and occasional evening classes. In addition to theclasses, trips, speaker forums and clubs scheduled for fall and springsemesters, social activities and special events are offered throughoutthe year. Classes are held at various locations including NOVAManassas, churches and senior living facilities. Instructors andpresenters come from diverse backgrounds and are experts in theirfields and leaders in various professions. Some are also LLI members.LLI provides a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere to facilitatelearning. Mental stimulation is as important as physical exercise inmaintaining good health. Making new friends is also an important partof the LLI concept.Dues are 100 for a twelve-month membership. Members can attend asmany classes and activities as they wish, depending on available space.There will be charges for trips and for some classes and special events.Any person age 50 or older is cordially invited to become a member bycompleting the online membership application or the form at the backof this program guide.LLI-Manassas is able to offer a limited number of partial scholarships(memberships) to current and potential members. If you are interestedin this assistance, contact a board member, who will present yourrequest at the next board meeting. You will then be notified of theaction taken by the board.The Manassas LLI was organized in 2003 and is one of many LLIslocated throughout the United States and Canada. Click “LLI Class Registration” at thetop of the web page. Log in using your Username and Password(LOGIN box on right.) Need help? Print directions from theregistration page for How to Renew Your Membership, Register forClasses, and Manage Your Account Information.Reminder: You must renew your annual membership dues beforeregistering for classes.Mail-in Registration. Use the form at the back of this program guide.Sign up online or by mail for as many forums/classes/trips/clubs as youwish, but plan to attend all, since instructors and coordinators preparefor the total number registered. If you are wait-listed for a class, thecoordinator will make every effort to get you into the class and will letyou know if space is available.Coordinators. An LLI member serves as coordinator for eachforum/class/trip. Contact the coordinator if you have questions. Aboutone week before each forum/class/trip you signed up for starts, youwill receive a reminder by email or phone from the coordinator.Venues. Directions to class venues are at the back of this programguide and are included on LLI’s website (lli-manassas.org).Bring a Guest. Members may bring potential LLI members to oneclass meeting each semester (space permitting and any fees paid).Dues, Fees and Refunds. Membership dues must be paid before youregister for classes. New members who join in September will pay 100, and those who join in January will pay 50 and then 100 thefollowing September. Yearly renewal dues are payable in September.Please pay class and trip fees at registration – you will not beregistered unless fees are paid. LLI will refund fees if a class, trip orevent is full or is cancelled. LLI will also refund fees for classes andcarpooled-trips if the member notifies the coordinator at least sevendays in advance that he/she is unable to attend unless the fee is nonrefundable. Fall 2016 Program GuideClimate Change Panel Discussion (F1602)Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. social; 10:30 a.m. panel, Sept. 28Hylton Performing Arts CenterLeader: Warren BeetonMany scientists and world leaders believe climate change is one of thethree main destructive forces on today’s planet Earth. This forum willprovide an open panel discussion on climate change led by WarrenBeeton, an engineer who was on the team that developed the MontrealProtocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This treatydeveloped international policy changes that provided the ultimatecorrection to the atmospheric ozone issue. He will be joined by JudyLamana and Dr. Mitch Rachlis. After a short introductory talk by eachpanel member, they will be open to your questions.Warren Beeton graduated from Cornell University with bachelor'sand master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. After 40 years inengineering leadership positions, he retired as vice president ofengineering for Emerson Climate Technologies. During his career withEmerson, he worked with Congress and the EPA on legislative andregulatory issues, focusing on ozone protection, climate change, andenergy efficiencyJudy Lamana graduated from the University of California with abachelor's degree in economics and environmental studies. After asuccessful career in global commerce, she retired in 2012. Since then,she has focused on the study of planetary climate change and localactivism. She founded the Warrenton Climate Change Group, whichconducts community outreach and education, as well as policyadvocacy at the state and federal levels.Mitch Rachlis holds a Ph.D. in economics and is retired after 30 yearswith the Government Accounting Office. At GAO he specialized inanalyzing the performance and regulation of housing, mortgage, andfinancial markets. Mitch has taught economics, real estate finance, andfinancial markets at several universities. He has published professionalarticles on risks in markets, statistical appraisal methods, statisticaltests for discrimination in financial markets and financial literacy. Bat Boy is the story of a boy raised bybats in the hills of West Virginia. The effect of his appearance on thecommunity and the ways in which he tries to fit in resonate with someparts of society today.
