Volume 91, Issue 8May 2016SARSEF 2016Deirdre W. Brosnihan, PE, M.ASCE, Southern Arizona Branch PresidentEach March, members from the Southern Arizona Branch of ASCE volunteer as sponsored prize judges at theSouthern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Fair (SARSEF) to award the ASCE Southern Arizona BranchExcellence in Civil Engineering Award to a deserving project in 6th, 7th and8th grade. As with past years, there were many excellent and creativeprojects to review and choose between. The judging is done of thestudent’s presentation, which are set up in the ballroom of the TucsonConvention Center, and have all names and school information removed tokeep judging blind. After the judging panel has agreed on the winners, wethen participate in the practice interviews for the students. At the middleschool level these interviews don’t impact the scores, however, it is goodpractice for the high school level where they will impact the scoring. Thisyear’s winners were: Stephen Gilding (6th grade), Yonah Temlock (7thgrade), and Samuel Phillips and Jakob Fay (8th grade – team project). At our April luncheon, we invited all of the students along with a parent/guardian to attend, show their poster andbe awarded a certificate and 150 cash prize (taped to the back of their giant checks). We heard great feedbackfrom the membership that they really enjoyed meeting these students and seeing their creative SARSEF projects.Having the students at our April luncheon has been our tradition now for quite a few years and we hope that youwill join us next April.Phoenix Branch YMF News and NotesRyan Circello, PE,May Monthly Meeting- Half Moon Location at 5:30PM!This month's meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 24th, at 5:30pm at Half Moon Sports Grill at 2121 E.
