The documentation methodwas used to collect the data, and to analyze the data, the qualitative method wasapplied. This research applied the theory of Types of Figurative Languageproposed by Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963) to find and identifypersonification and hyperbolic expressions from the album, and Types of Meaningaccording to Leech (1974) to classify and analyze the meaning of personificationand hyperbolic expressions. The study indeed focuses on personification andhyperbole only because both are the most common expressions/figurativelanguages used by the songwriters to personate particular objects or stress andexaggerate their words on the song they write to make it more beautiful, dramatic, and meaningful. 14 out of 15 songs of the Scream Aim Fire album used bothpersonification and hyperbole in their lyrics. 12 of them used both personificationand hyperbole, one of them used only personification, one of them used onlyhyperbole, and the last one used neither of them. As for the types of meaning, therewere connotative meaning, affective meaning, thematic meaning, and reflectivemeaning. Keywords: figurative language, personification, hyperboleAbstrakPenelitian yang berjudul “Figurative Languae in Bullet For My Valentine‟s AlbumScream Aim Fire” ini bertujuan untuk menemukan dan mengidentifikasi jenis-jenisbahasa kiasan, khususnya personifikasi dan hiperbola, di album milik grup musikBullet For My Valentine, Scream Aim Fire dan menganalisis masing-masingmaknanya. 14 dari 15 lagu di album265Received 22 May 2019Received in revised form 15 November 2019Accepted 21 November 2019

Sementara untuk jenis makna, ditemukanmakna konotatif, afektif, tematik, dan reflektif.Kata kunci: bahasa kiasan, personifikasi, hiperbola1. Background of the StudyA song can be considered acombination of two branches of the art, music and literature. Music is the melodythat accompanies and literature itself canbe seen in the lyrics of the song. Songlyrics can be categorized as literaturebecause it has some similar elements topoetry, even though not all of song lyricslook like poetry. One of the similaritiesbetween poetry and song besidesexpressing feeling in a beautiful aestheticway is the use of figurative language.According to Knickerbocker andRenninger (1963), figurative language issometimes called metaphorical language,or simply metaphor. There are 10 (ten)types of figurative language according tothem, and two of them are personificationand hyperbole.Personification is a figurativelanguage that personates animals, ideas, abstractions, and intimate objects withhuman form, character, or sensibilities(Holman, 1986). And hyperbole is afigure of speech of bold exaggeration(Preminger, 1975). Both personificationand hyperbole are very commonexpressions/figurative languages thesong-writers use in songs. In this paper,an album from Welsh metalcore band,Bullet For My Valentine, was chosen. The album is entitled “Scream Aim Fire”(Deluxe Edition) and it consists of 15(fifteen) songs. The paper itself focuseson finding personification and hyperbolicexpressions used in the album.2. Problems of the StudyBased on the background above, theproblems can be stated as follows:a. Aims of the StudyBased on the problem mentionedbefore, the aims of the study can bestated as follows:a. xpressions are used in Bullet For MyValentine‟s album “Scream AimFire”.b. Those songs are aboutwar, love, hate, humanity, mentalproblem, and others.4.2 MethodandTechniqueofCollecting DataThisresearchappliedthedocumentation method to collect thedata. The data were collected through thefollowing steps:a. Downloading the entire songs of thealbum Scream Aim Fire fromYoutube.b. Downloading the entire lyrics ofeach song from www.azlyrics.com.c. Note-taking every personificationand hyperbolic expression found ineach song lyrics.4.3 MethodandTechniqueofAnalyzing DataThis research applied the qualitativemethod and the data were analyzedthrough the following steps:a. Listening to the songs while readingthe lyrics many times in order tounderstand them completely.b. Searching for the personification andhyperbolic expressions from eachsong lyrics and identifying thefactors why the lyrics are consideredpersonification or hyperbole.c. Analyzing every meaning ofpersonificationandhyperbolicexpressions found from each songusing the Types of Meaningproposed by Leech (1947).d. Interpreting the meaning of eachpersonificationandhyperbolicexpression found.4.4 MethodandTechniqueofPresenting DataThe analysis was presented in aninformal method, meaning that the datawere described through words, withoutany table, graphic nor statistic presentedto support the research.5.Analysis5.1 Figurative Language“Scream Aim Fire”5.2.1UsedinScream Aim FireScream Aim Fire is the first song ofthe album Scream Aim Fire. This song isabout World War I in the perspective ofa soldier. He killed his enemies and alsofound his friends die because of the war.He also felt how death could come tohim anytime.a. LyricsKill your enemies, (1)My brothers dead around me! (2)Wounds are hurting (3)Death is creeping for me! (4) b. Figurative Language1) PersonificationGod has spoken through hisconscience! The sentence above is in the 14thline of the song. God is a concept of abeing which is believed as the creator andthe ruler of the universe and commonlyworshipped by the believers as havingpower over nature and human fortunes.Speaking is an act of saying something inorder to convey information, opinion, orfeeling. And conscience is described asan inner feeling or voice viewed as aguide to the rightness or wrongness ofone‟s behavior. Both „god‟ and„conscience‟ are abstract things, not

268 N L Cintya Sandi A., A.A S. Shanti Sari Dewi, N W Sukarinihuman beings nor living things. However, in the lyrics, „god‟ is beinghumanized by stating it „has spoken‟ orspeaks. And an act of speaking requires ahuman mouth to proceed. Yet,conscience is an inner feeling so onecan‟t literally speak through it. „God‟ that„speak‟ through its „conscience‟ makesthe expression considered as apersonification because it humanizesnon-living and abstract things.2) HyperboleThe only way out is to die!The sentence above is in the 13thline of the song. It expresses howdifficult the situation that oneexperiences, that makes „die‟ seems to belike the only one way to leave theproblem. Thus, the expression isconsidered hyperbole.5.2.2 Ashes of the InnocentAshes of the Innocent is the fifteenthand the last song of the album. This songis about Holocaust or the genocidetowards European Jews in the World WarII done by German Nazi commanded byAdolf Hitler.a. Lyrics(One, two, three, four.) (1)Ashes of the innocent (2)The end for you and me (3)Darkness, screams of agony are beggingset me free (4) b. Figurative Language1) PersonificationDarkness, screams of agony arebegging set me freeThis sentence is in the 4th line of thesong. Begging is an act of askingsomeone earnestly or humbly forsomething. Darkness and screams ofagony are not human beings, whichmakes the expression classified aspersonification.Vol 23.4 Nopember 20195.2.3 Watching Us Die TonightWatching Us Die Tonight is thethirteenth song of the album. The song isabout an unhealthy relationship betweena man and a woman that finally ends upwith break up. They could be hurt, cheated on, or abused each other, and hadbeen through break up several timesbefore finally made up again.a. LyricsBack against the wall (1)What the fuck just happened? (2)(Don't you cry) (3)We've been here before (4) b. Figurative Language1) HyperboleBut honestly, you’re killing meThis sentence is in the 11th line ofthe song. It‟s not about someone wholiterally got killed by his partner. It isactually an expression about a greatdisappointment he feels towards hispartner because of one particular thinghis partner has done. However, because itis an exaggeration, this is considered ahyperbole.5.2.4 Last to KnowLast to Know is the tenth song of thealbum. The song is about a rage someonefeels because some people are talking andhating him behind his back, yet have nocourage to utter it directly. Instead, theykeep gossiping about him, laughing athim, being envied, and looking for hismistakes.a. LyricsHere come broken bones! (1)Where's your sticks and stones!? (2)What'd you use to hurt me? (3)Something you should know! (4) b. Figurative LanguageThere is likely no personification norhyperbolic expression found in the “Lastto Know”.

Figurative Language in Bullet For My Valentine Album “Scream Aim Fire” 2695.2 The Meaning of FigurativeLanguage Used in “Scream AimFire”5.2.1 Scream Aim FireScream Aim Fire is the first song ofthe album Scream Aim Fire. This song isabout World War I in the perspective of asoldier. He killed his enemies and alsofound his friends dead because of thewar. He also felt how death could cometo him anytime in the situation. The title,Scream Aim Fire, refers to the act of thesoldier using his weapon. He screams, aims the weapon, and fires it to theenemy. The phrase “Over the top!” in the10th line of the song is used to describewhen the soldiers went up and over thetrenches to the battle. There are several personification andhyperbolic expressions found in the song, they are:a. God has spoken through hisconscience! The expression above contains aconnotative meaning since it has acommunicative value more than itsconceptual content or what it saysliterally. It personates god as if it canspeak through its conscience. “Godspoken through his conscience” couldmean the God‟s will, the fate. So the saidwar is God‟s will or fate that, the personthought, has been decided from the start. It actually expresses either sincerity ordespair, since it already happens, whetherhe wants it or not, he must accept and gowith it.b. The only way out is to dieThe expression above contains anaffective meaning since it reflectspersonal feelings of the speaker. Itexpresses about how war is aboutbetween life and death. There is only alittle chance someone can be alive afterthe happening. There is no escape in awar, and only little chance to come backalive, as if the only way to escape this isto die. However, the sentence tells moreabout the feeling of persistence ratherthan desperation. It is the soldiers‟ prideof doing either life or death mission likewar.5.2.2 Ashes of the InnocentAshes of the Innocent is the fifteenthand the last song of the album. This songis about Holocaust or the genocidetowards European Jews in World War IIwhich was done by German Nazicommanded by Adolf Hitler. It expressan anger, sorrow, fear, and desperation. The tittle, Ashes of the Innocent, isclearly referring to the innocent victimsthat got killed during the Holocaust.Since Holocaust is identic with fire, theirdead bodies are symbolized by ashes. There is only one personificationexpression found from the song:a. Darkness, screams of agony, arebegging set me freeThe expression above contains aconnotative meaning since it has acommunicative value more than itsconceptual content or what it saysliterally. Darkness and screams of agonyrefer to the Nazi‟s extermination campand poor people who got caught andcaged in there. It is told that they wereall begging to be set free, even though, finally, they got killed by poison gas thatwas purposely sprayed in order togenocide them.5.2.3 Watching Us Die TonightWatching Us Die Tonight is thethirteenth song of the album. The song isabout an unhealthy relationship betweena man and a woman that finally ends upwith break up. They could be hurt, cheated on, or abused each other, and hadbeen through break up several timesbefore finally made up again. But in thissituation, they are truly going to separateways because they realize they were just“wasting their time”. The tittle, WatchingUs Die Tonight, means that the

270 N L Cintya Sandi A., A.A S. Shanti Sari Dewi, N W SukariniVol 23.4 Nopember 2019relationship between them is dying orended. There is only one hyperbolicexpression found in the song, it is:a. But honestly, you’re killing meThe expression above is consideredhaving affective meaning since it reflectspersonal feelings of the speaker. It issimply about a man who got hurt verybad by his woman. The man may usuallyact though in front of his woman butwhen he couldn‟t take it anymore; he is“being honest” on how she made himsuffer a lot. But it is also possible that theman used the word “honestly” toemphasize his feeling that he got hurtmore than she could see and think.Based on the analysis, it is concludedthat there are 4 (four) types of meaningfound in the entire personification andhyperbole; they are connotative meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning, and thematic meaning. As a result, thereare 19 (nineteen) connotative meanings,17 (seventeen) affective meanings, 2(two) thematic meanings, and 1 (one)reflective meaning managed to beanalyzed.5.2.4 Last to KnowLast to Know is the tenth song of thealbum. The song is about a rage someonefeels because some people are talking andhating him behind his back, yet have nocourage to utter it directly. Instead theykeep gossiping about him, laughing athim, being envied, and looking for hismistakes. But, these people are still“stooping so low” in front of him becausethey aren‟t in his level, and stay in their“hypocrisy from jealously”.However, there is no personificationnor hyperbolic expression can be foundin this song.Knickerbocker, K. L. & Reninger, H.1963. Interpreting Literature. NewYork: Henry Holt & Company.6. ConclusionBased on the findings, it isconcluded that both personification andhyperbole are used almost entirely in thealbum. 14 (fourteen) out of 15 (fifteen)songs of the album, Scream Aim Fire, used these types of figurative language intheir lyrics. 12 (twelve) of them usedboth types, 1 (one) of them only usedpersonification, 1 (one) used onlyhyperbole, and 1 (one) used neither ofthem. From the entire album that consistsof 15 (fifteen) songs, totally there were21 (twenty one) personifications and 19(nineteen) hyperbole identified.7. BibliographyHolman, C. H. 1960.
