However,if an application cannot be completed for thepreferred semester, a renewal application mustbe filled out and submitted. Canadian applicantswith transcripts/mark sheets outside of Canadaare strongly advised to begin the process ofapplication at least four months before thestart of classes for the semester of interest. It isthe applicant’s responsibility to request officialtranscripts from all Canadian and non-Canadiansecondary or postsecondary institutions attended.

English ProficiencyRequirementsThe following applicants are exempt from takingthe Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL),the Test of Written English (TWE) and the OralProficiency examination:n Canadian citizens or landed immigrants whosenative language is English.n Applicants who have completed all of theirsecondary or postsecondary education inCanada or another English-speaking countrysuch as the United Kingdom, Australia, theWest Indies or other countries as specified bythe Office of Undergraduate Admissions.For those applicants not meeting the aboveexemption requirements, English proficiencyrequirements are TOEFL with a minimum scoreof 550 and TWE and oral scores of 5.5 or more,IBT (Internet-based TOEFL) score of 79-80, andcomputer-based TOEFL with a minimum scoreof 213 and oral score of 5.5 or more. Test resultscannot be more than two years old. Applicantsalso may take the University of Michigan EnglishProficiency Exam (MELAB). The minimum MELABscore required for Wayne State admission is 85.For more information about the MELAB, contactthe University of Michigan at (734) 764-2416.French-speaking Canadians are required to presentresults of the TOEFL/TWE/Oral examinations.However, if academic credentials indicate differentcircumstances, exemptions are possible.
