GENERAL STUDENT INFORMATIONCOURSE SELECTIONSWe hope that the course descriptions found in this booklet will help you make wise decisions. We encourageyou to read them carefully. Each student will be required to complete the course selection process. Your choice of electives should be based on your interests, abilities, past school achievements, andeducational plans. Language, math and science admission requirements for post-secondaryeducation need to be considered carefully when selecting courses. Students, parents, and guardians are always welcome to discuss course selections and other concernswith a counsellor.It is the responsibility of students and parents to ensure that course selections meet theunique admission requirements of every institution they are considering attending.COURSE CHANGESWe hope that you will choose your elective courses carefully. In special cases, your counsellor may consider arequest for a course change if this is made early in the semester; however, these changes are dependent onavailable spaces in classes. Some classes may be cancelled due to insufficient enrolment.STUDENT SUPPORT AT SOUTH KAMLOOPS SECONDARYCOUNSELLING SERVICESThis is a student-centred service. EXAMINATIONSREQUIRED PROVINCIAL ASSESSMENTSLITERACY 10 ASSESSMENT:The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency inliteracy. It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 10 year.The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment assesses student ability to use critical thinking and analysis tomake meaning from a diverse array of texts. It also assesses the ability of students to communicatetheir ideas. The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment is not based on a particular course, but on learningacross multiple subjects, from kindergarten to Grade 10.LITERACY 12 ASSESSMENT:The Grade 12 Literacy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency inliteracy. It is a graduation requirement and completed during students’ Grade 12 year.The Grade 12 Literacy Assessment assesses students’ ability to use critical and reflective thinking andanalysis to make meaning from a diverse array of texts. It also assesses the ability of students tocommunicate their ideas, or those found in the texts.The Grade 12 Literacy assessment is not based on a particular subject matter or course, but rather onlearning across multiple subjects from kindergarten to Grade 12.Students are advised to speak to their counsellor as it pertains to university entrance requirementsinvolving this assessment.NUMERACY 10 ASSESSMENT:The Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency innumeracy. It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 10 year.The Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment focuses on the application of mathematical concepts learnedacross multiple subjects from kindergarten to Grade 10. It requires students to solve problems by usingfive numeracy processes (different ways of thinking and working): interpret, apply, solve, analyze andcommunicate. The numeracy processes are described in the pre-assessment activities and in thespecifications.BC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPSGraduating students with high achievement in Grade 10, 11 and 12 courses might qualify to winscholarships worth 1,250. A cumulative average percentage will be calculated and form the basis fordetermining winners.3

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND POSTSECONDARY ADMISSIONSGRADUATION NOTES1. The school defines a grade 12 student as a person who will complete all graduation requirements by the endof the 2022-2023 school year.2. Admission to post-secondary institutions often depends upon more than high school graduation. Each postsecondary program has its own unique admission requirements. Accordingly, students must review theadmission requirements of all institutions and programs they contemplate entering in order to ensure thattheir senior courses fulfil admission criteria.Students may find more information at Education Planner BC.caAdmissions information can be found by clicking on the “Admissions Info” tab for programs of interest.3. French Immersion: Students take 14 courses in French in order to complete French Immersion graduationrequirements. These include:a. Grade 8 & 9: Sciences Humaines, Mathématiques, Sciences Naturelles, Français Langueb. Grade 10:Sciences Naturelles, Sciences Humaines,& Français Languec. Grade 11:Exploration en Sciences Humainesd. D.A.T.A. – Digital Arts and Technology AcademyCONNECTING STUDENTS TO THEIR FUTUREPROGRAMWHAT IS THE PROGRAM ABOUT?For students aspiring to careers in the software industry, the Digital Arts and TechnologyAcademy is a great start for launching a career in this exciting field. Art Design – Concepts covered include; steps in the creativeprocess, creative thinking, digital and non-digital bestpractices, psychology of design and colour, and art and designprinciples.Physics and Math – Get the skills you need to program andcalculate your own collision engines, reflection, and vectorbased movement.Programming – The concepts of logic, flow algorithmicthinking, and creative problem solving are taught using Javaand a variety of scripting languages.CREDITSWHAT DO STUDENTS EARN IF THEY TAKE THE D.A.T.A. HAIRSTYLIST PROGRAMCONNECTING STUDENTS TO THEIR FUTUREPROGRAM – Note: This program commences in Semester 2WHAT IS THE PROGRAM ABOUT?The program is designed to allow students to explore this career preparation program. Uponsuccessful completion of the eight learning units students will have a firm foundation in thefollowing: Theory of hairdressing fundamentalsAnatomy and physiologyEstablishing a professional imageSalon ecology (hygiene, bacteriologyand sanitation) Advanced hair services (Cutting, haircolouring and permanent waving)Retail sales and marketingSalon managementPresentation of learningThe Hairstylist Program is a one-year program offered at NorKam Senior Secondary School. Grade 10and 11 students from School District No. 73 are eligible for the program. Students have the option ofreturning to their school of origin to participate in the graduation ceremony. Students must complete 300work based training hours. * This program commences at the start of semester 2 (February) andconcludes after semester 1 (January) of the following year.CREDITSWHAT DO STUDENTS EARN IF THEY TAKE THE HAIRSTYLIST PROGRAM? Students enrolled in this program must complete all but 4 grade 10, 11, and 12 Ministry of Educationrequired courses. The InstrumentationMechanic training will be at Thompson Rivers University and students will be responsible fortheir own transportation. YOUTH WORK IN TRADES PROGRAM – CREDITFOR YOUR TRADES RELATED PART TIME JOBCONNECTING STUDENTS TO THEIR FUTUREPROGRAMWHAT IS THIS PROGRAM ABOUT?The Youth Work In Trades Program is an initiative that allows students to claim high schoolcourse credit as well accumulate apprenticeship hours with the Industry Training Authority – allfor the out of school work students are doing in their part time and summer jobs. The work mustbe trades related work being supervised by a certified tradesperson to qualify.CREDITS and BenefitsWHAT DO STUDENTS EARN THROUGH YOUTH WORK IN TRADES? Students will earn 4 high school course credits for every 120 hours worked, for a maximum of 16 credits.If students pursue a certification in that trade after high school, their accumulated hours count towardstheir certification.Students completing 900 hours, and graduating with a C average, may receive a 1000 award from theMinistry of Education.Examples of TradesIS YOUR WORK TRADES RELATED? They usually decide wherebig equipment will go in a facility,oversees the installation process, assembles parts, conducts test runs, and fine tunes finishedjobs. When a machine stops working properly, the factory will call on this person totroubleshoot, make repairs, and replace damaged parts. Professionals occasionally specializewith certain types of machinery, though most have a very broad understanding of manydifferent kinds of equipment, from large electricity generators to wind turbines to assembly linerobots.CREDITSWHAT DO STUDENTS EARN IF THEY TAKE THE INDUSTRIAL MECHANIC (MILLWRIGHT) / MACHINIST PROGRAM?
