CONDITIONCHECK ONECHECK O N E-EXCELLENT-DETERIORATED-UNALTEREDORIGINAL SITEXGOOO-RUINSALTERED-MOVED- FAIR-UNEXPOSEDDATEDESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND OHlGlNAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCEThe Beverley H i s t o r i c D i s t r i c t i n Staunton, Virginia is a compact, p r i m a r i l ycommercial a r e a c o n s i s t i n g of 30 a c r e s and including eleven square blocks.Approximately150 buildings, of varying degrees of a r c h i t e c t u r a l and h i s t o r i c a l s i g n i f i c a n c e , a r e l o c a t e dwithin t h e d i s t r i c t which i s bounded a s follows: on the north by Frederick S t r e e t ; on t h ewest by Lewis S t r e e t ; on the south by the Wharf Area H i s t o r i c D i s t r i c t ; and on the e a s tby Market S t r e e t . Lewis and Market s t r e e t s , t o the west and e a s t r e s p e c t i v e l y , are b o t ht r a n s i t i o n a l boundaries between t h e c e n t r a l business d i s t r i c t and r e s i d e n t i a l a r e a s .Most of t h e southern boundary borders onto an e x i s t i n g h i s t o r i c d i s t r i c t , while mostof t h e northern boundary borders an urban renewal s i t e . Beverley S t r e e t , Staunton's"Main S t r e e t , " b i s e c t s t h e d i s t r i c t i n an east-west d i r e c t i o n .The designation owes something t o h i s t o r i c a l precedent a s w e l l a s t oconditions. A l l of t h e a r e a included i n the d i s t r i c t was already a e x eof Staunton as e a r l y a s 1786. The s t r e e t s s t i l l follow t h e o r i g i n a l g r i dout i n the 1740s by t h e town's founder, W i l l i a m Beverley, and t h e countyThomas L e w i s .existingdby the c i t ypattern l a i dsurveyor,B u i l t on a s e r i e s of h i l l s , Staunton has an extremely r i c h and v a r i e d s k y l i n e , anunusual a s s e t f o r a small town. This is a p a r t i c u l a r l y noteworthy c h a r a c t e r i s t i csince Staunton i s e s s e n t i a l l y a low-rise c i t y , with few buildings i n t h e downtawnarea r i s i n g above f o u r s t o r i e s . The dome of t h e Augusta County Courthouse, t h e o l dYMCA's clock tower, and t h e observation tower of the Masonic Temple Building s t a n d o u ta s f o c a l p o i n t s of t h e skyline. These landnarks a r e f u r t h e r enchanced by numerouschurch s p i r e s i n the surrounding neighborhoods.The h i l l s a r e an i n t e g r a l p a r t ofthe town's f a b r i c and c o n t r i b u t e g r e a t l y t o t h e picturesque q u a l i t y of t h e landscape.Panoramic v i s t a s a r e t o be found from many of Staunton's higher e l e v a t i o n s .W i t h t h e exception of parking a r e a s , t h e r e a r e v i r t u a l l y no open spaces w i t h i n t h ed i s t r i c t . A s a r e s u l t , landscaping i s minimal.The d i s t r i c t is a compact, contiguousc o m e r c i a l a r e a , e s p e c i a l l y along Beverley S t r e e t . Here, except f o r the occasionalalleyway, t h e buildings a r e a l l attached w i t h l i t t l e v a r i e t y i n setback from t h e s t r e e t .The width of the s t r e e t s i s e s s e n t i a l l y t h e same a s it was i n t h e 18th century.Despite the f a c t t h a t Staunton was founded i n t h e mid-18th century, t h e p h y s i c a lremains of t h a t f r o n t i e r v i l l a g e a r e , f o r the most p a r t , gone. The conunercial coreMost of t h e s enow c o n s i s t s of a well-preserved c o l l e c t i o n of 19th-century b u i l d i n g s .d a t e from t h e post-Civil W a r period, although s e v e r a l examples from t h e e a r l i e r p a r tA s might be expected, these e a r l y b u i l d i n g s a r e of a simple,of the century remain.vernacular s t y l e and a r e executed i n l o c a l building m a t e r i a l s such a s b r i c k o r n a t i v estone. There a r e a l s o a few non-conforming i n t r u s i o n s and some h e a v i l y remodeleds t o r e f r o n t s , b u t t h e bulk of the d i s t r i c t ' s buildings r e f l e c t the s t y l e s of t h eVictorian e r a . Facades run t h e gamut from e a r l y 19th-century vernacular through t h eTheVictorian-era r e v i v a l s t o t h e opulence of turn-of-the-century neo-classicism.predominant s t y l e i s t h e I t a l i a n a t e comnercial. The most abundant b u i l d i n g m a t e r i a lIS b r i c k , although s t o n e , t e r r a c o t t a , concrete, and stucco a r e a l s o used.Theprevalence of b r i c k I t a l i a n a t e s t r u c t u r e s of two t o four s t o r i e s g i v e s a sense ofcohesion t o t h e e n t i r e downtown area. The few o l d e r buildings t h a t do n o t adhere t othis formula ( f o r example those t h a t a r e t a l l e r , of a more exuberant s t y l e , o r b u i l tof a d i f f e r e n t m a t e r i a l ) serve t o convey a sense of v a r i e t y and d i v e r s i t y t o t h e s t r e e t scapes.(See Continuation Sheet #18)

F u r t h e r , it c l e a r l y represents t h e d e v e l o e n tof Stauntonfrom an e a r l y m i l l settlement t o one of the henandbahValley's leading mercantile . . :centers.I n 1732, j u s t s i x t e e n y e a r s a f t e r Governor Spotswood's Knights of the Golden Horseshoef i r s t entered t h e Shenandoah Valley, t h e John Lewis family s e t t l e d about two miles e a s t ofwhat i s now Staunton. According t o t r a d i t i o n , this Scotch-Irish family was t h e f i r s t groupof Europeans t o emigrate t o this v i c i n i t y , b u t o t h e r s soon followed.On September 6, 1736 W i l l i a m Gooch, Lieutenant Governor (and l a t e r Governor) o fVirginia, issued a p a t e n t f o r 118,491 a c r e s w e s t of t h e Blue Ridge Mountains t o Williamof Essex County. This land g r a n t embraced a l a r g e p a r t of present-day AugustaI n order to f u l f i l l t h e terms of h i s g r a n t , Beverley a c t i v e l y encouraged s e t t l e ment on h i s t r a c t , even t o t h e e x t e n t of sending agents north t o Pennsylvania and Marylandt o s o l i c i t immigrants. M o s t of these e a r l y s e t t l e r s were t h e Scotch-Irish, whosedescendants today make up a s i g n i f i c a n t proportion of t h e a r e a ' s population. Beverleyestablished himself on h i s land sometime between 1736 and 1745, probably by b u i l d i n g am i l l , because i n h i s correspondence, he r e f e r s t o t h e settlement a s h i s " m i l l place."z;;epThe f i r s t c o u r t of Augusta County was commissioned i n October of 1745. Beverley hadalready b u i l t a courthouse on h i s land i n a n t i c i p a t i o n of this a c t i o n . This rude l o g b u i l ding was the f i r s t of f i v e county courthouses b u i l t on t h e same s i t e . 2 W i t h the e s t a b l i s h ment of a j u d i c i a l s e a t a t Beverley's m i l l place, t h e r e arose a need f o r t a v e r n s and innst o accomodate t r a v e l e r s . Within a few s h o r t years, a v i l l a g e began growing up aroundthe courthouse.The f i r s t mention of t h e name Staunton occurs on t h e 1747-48 ( n o t recorded u n t i l1749) town plan l a i d o f f by Beverley and surveyor Thomas Lewis, son of t h e f i r s t s e t t l e r .In t h i s plan, the a r e a around t h e courthouse was divided i n t o t h i r t e e n l o t s o f approximate1one-half a c r e each i n 1747; a year l a t e r thirty-one more l o t s were added. This land wasdeeded by W i l l i a m Beverley f o r t h e express purpose of founding a town. T r a d i t i o n maintainst h a t the town was named f o r t h e wife of Governor W i l l i a m Gooch, Lady Rebecca Staunton ( a l s o"Stanton"). Likewise, t h e b a t t l e s of t h e American Revolution seem t o have had l i t t l ed i r e c t e f f e c t on Staunton, a s it was s t i l l very much on t h e f r o n t i e r . There were, o fcourse, t r o o p c o n s c r i p t i o n s and t h e well-documented i n c i d e n t o f t h e V i r g i n i a L e g i s l a t u r e ' smeeting a t Augusta P a r i s h (now T r i n i t y Episcopal) Church w h i l e F l e e i n g T a r l e t o n ' s t r o o p s .From 1786 t o 1804 s e v e r a l annexations of surrounding land g r e a t l y expandedboundaries o f t h e o r i g i n a l town p l a n .
