HA L F E N H A N DRA IL CO NNE CTIO NS Materials/Corrosion protection General Handrails are a critical safety component of walkways, balconies, bridges and various industrial applications. Handrail design is dictated by strict code requirements outlined in the latest editions of the International Building Code (IBC), ASCE ‒ 7, and OSHA 29 CFR 1926. These codes specify dimensional, height, spacing and loading requirements that must be observed when designing the structural system. HALFEN Handrail Connections are engineered to comply with all code requirements, while still providing a safe and reliable connection into the edge of thin slabs. Anchoring into the edge of slabs increases the usable square footage for balconies and walkways. wrong grout is used. The HALFEN Handrail Connection product range consists of HGB stainless steel and HTA-R galvanized systems to accommodate various levels of corrosive environments. HALFEN Handrail Connections are cast into the concrete and eliminate the need for post-installed drilling or coring into the slab. This eliminates the risk of damaging reinforcement or cracking the slab. Railing posts grouted or cast into the concrete can be susceptible to concrete freeze-thaw or corrosion if the HALFEN Handrail Connections are designed to be nailed to the form work allowing for quick, easy and accurate installation. The channel provides horizontal adjustment while installing the railing posts to accommodate for construction tolerances. The corrosion process is complex and can be attributed to many factors. HALFEN Handrail Connections are available in either Hot Dip Galvanized ( 50 μm) or Stainless Steel, depending on the level of corrosion resistance required. The corrosion resistance of zinc coatings is primarily dependent on the thickness of the coating relative 2016 HALFEN · AW HC 16-US · www.halfenusa.com to the environmental conditions. Zinc corrosion rates can be obtained from the American Galvanizer's Association and ASTM B 633. For moderately to highly corrosive environments (industrial and coastal environments) or where an extended lifetime of the connection is warranted, stainless steel is recommended. Corrosion can also occur when two dissimilar metals or alloys are in contact and in the presence of an electrolyte. This is know as Galvanic Corrosion or Bi-metal Corrosion. To prevent Galvanic Corrosion from occurring, all T-bolts, nuts, washers and channels shall be of the same material, i.e., stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers shall be used with stainless steel channels. All carbon steel components are Hot Dipped Galvanized in Accordance with ASTM A153. 5
