Course DescriptionEnglish 1301 introduces students to writing as an extended, complex, recursive processand prepares students for English 1302, which more rigorously examines the forms andstructures of argument and means to approaching multiple audiences. In 1301,students will write weekly, and will work on essay organization and development. Thecourse will emphasize close reading, summarizing, and analysis of expository texts,including student writing.Student Learning Outcomes1. Students will be able to use rhetorical terminology to describe writing.2. Students will be able to identify instances of plagiarism and explain why it is aserious offense in academic writing.3. Students will be able to interpret texts written for academic audiences.4. Students will be able to use academic writing conventions in their own writing.COURSE REQUIREMENTSAssignments / Activities / AssessmentsMajor Writing Assignments (WA):WA 1: Essay 10% – (2-3pages) Write a essay based on a a choice of prompts. MLAformat should be used for this paper. Two academic, peer reviewed sources should beused and included on a “Works Cited” page.WA 2: Essay 10% – (2-3pages) Write a essay based on a a choice of prompts. MLAformat should be used for this paper. Two academic, peer reviewed sources should beused and included on a “Works Cited” page.WA 3: Photo Essay 15% (10 pages) Create a photo essay illustrating yourunderstanding of a chosen themes from the course. This essay should be comprisedalmost entirely of images you create and collect. You will then write one paragraphabout each image explaining why that image illustrates the concept you have chosen.Each photo should reflect a term or topic from class discussion or individual readings.WA 4: Critical Reflection 15% – (2-4 pages) This reflective paper will present topicsof discussion from the course, using specific terminology. Include your experience inthe course, material you have learned, and how you will apply this information in thefuture.The syllabus/schedule are subject to change.

WA 5: Peer Review Reflection 10% – (2 pages) Based on what you have studiedduring the semester, you will review of one of your peer's WA 4 critical reflection paperbased on criteria provided in class. This paper will reflect on the content and form of thepaper as well as how the material is presented in essay format.Weekly Assignments:Reading Responses:Students will be asked to complete a brief reading response paper for each readingassignment given in class. These will be discussed each class period and assigned asneeded. They will be turned in, graded, and returned for consideration and correction.They will then all be kept together in a folder. The entire graded collection will be turnedin at the end of the semester for 15% of your final grade. These reading responses willbe no more than one page each.Journal Entries:Students will keep a writing journal (a spiral notebook, composition book, or folder withpaper) in which you should complete no less than three entries per day. These can bebrief such as a simple paragraph and should include information that you are learning inclass. Through this process, you will also keep a running page called a “word bank.”This will include words you find in daily readings with which you are unfamiliar. Thissemester long assignment will not be graded for content, but rather for consistentcompletion. It will be checked frequently in class.Class Participation:Students are expected to participate in classroom discussion on a daily basis. Thisincludes regular attendance, prompt assignment completion, and active discussionduring class time. This will count towards 5% of your grade.Attendance, Tardy, Late Work Policy:Late work will not be accepted. Be sure to contact your instructor before an assignmentis due if there is any question or information needed to complete the task. This is not areason for late work. All assignments will be due at the beginning of class. If you haveto miss a class, the assignment should be turned in before the class time begins.Attendance will be taken every class. Any student missing more than seven classperiods will be given a failing grade for the course. This includes any universityexcused absences. These should be scheduled with instructor before hand. Excessivetardies will be considered absences. Be in class. Be on time.The syllabus/schedule are subject to change.

Minimal Technical Skills NeededStudents should have access to a word processing program such as Microsoft Word tobe able to type papers for submission as needed as well as a printer to have themready to hand in at the beginning of the designated class time. Documents should besaved on a dropbox account or flash drive. Extra reading assignments may be sent tostudents through school emails. Students should check these regularly forannouncements from the instructor.Instructional MethodsThis class will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3:00 pm in the Hall ofLanguages, room 201. The course will be conducted in a lecture style with studentdiscussion. Students will be expected to complete reading and work outside of theclass room in order to be successful in the course.Student Responsibilities or Tips for Success in the CourseStudents should manage time regarding assignments to ensure proper attention isgiven to the details and quality of each paper.GRADINGFinal grades in this course will be based on the following scale:A 90%-100%B 80%-89%C 70%-79%D 60%-69%F 59% or BelowAssessment GradingASSIGNMENTPERCENTAGE OF FINAL GRADEWriting Assignments60%Reading Responses20%Journal Entries15%Class ParticipationTOTAL5%100%The syllabus/schedule are subject to change.

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS To fully participate in online courses you will need to use a current Flash enabledinternet browser. For PC and Mac users the suggested browser is Mozilla Firefox.
