Welcome to AUP!Downtown Los AngelesWe are proud to be the first and only university preparatory high school in downtown Los Angeles andwelcomed our inaugural class in the fall of 2014. AUP students live on site, immersed in the city in a brandnew high tech facility where we have developed one of the most unique learning environments in education.Our school is located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, a place that has evolved into a true city center forthe arts, culture, business, government, professional sports, theater, and entrepreneurship. We have integratedour unique access to these resources into our curriculum, and we are building relationships for our studentsthat will provide meaningful internships and community service opportunities for them.Collaboration and project-based learning across the disciplines and subjectareas is not only planned, it is expected. This is how students learn how tofunction in the "real world" once they leave AUP. STUDENT LIFEThe goal of AUP Student Life is to prepare students for the independenceand responsibility that comes with living in a city center. AUP’s numerousco-curricular outings and extracurricular clubs are the building blocks ofthe Student Life experience.Downtown LAThe location of AUP in downtown Los Angeles affordsus the opportunity to engage with the city in a variety ofways. Weekends allow for excursions to the vast arrayof sporting events in and around Los Angeles -- StaplesCenter, the home of the two-time Stanley Cup ChampionKings, the 16-time NBA champion Lakers, and the Clippers, is just a few blocks away. There arecountless music performances, public lectures, art shows, and plays within a short distance ofthe school. ACADEMICSIntegrated/Blended LearningAUP utilizes a blended (or flipped) classroom model, which asks the students to study the assigned materialand/or complete any assigned problems before they come to class. The "flipped" classroom method, whichoriginated at Harvard University, puts the initial learning responsibility on the students. The method probesand elucidates conceptual understanding of the material.Faculty SpotlightMs. Felicia GrahamGlobal Studies Department ChairFelicia Graham earned her M.A. in Global and International Studies with an emphasis in political economy,sustainable development and the environment.Her research specifically explores the economic, socio-cultural, andpsychological impacts related to resource extraction in Latin Americaand the Middle East, drawing from the fields of History, Anthropology,Political Economy, and Political Ecology.Ms. Graham’s area of most enthusiasm is education, which shebelieves has a liberating potential for individuals – particularly thearea of Global Studies, which enables students to better understand,navigate, and affect positive change in an ever more complex andintricate world.STEAM InitiativeThe AUP STEAM Initiative (ASI) is a jointcollaboration between AUP, scientistsfrom leading research institutions worldwide, and the CK-12 Foundation. In the firstsemester, students learn to appreciate, analyze,and critique the world’s many cultures, socialsystems, policies, and economies. The backgroundand theoretical knowledge gained in the firstsemester is put into practice in the second semester, where students work collaboratively to designand carry out an interdisciplinary research projectoverseen by teachers from all departments.Faculty SpotlightMr. Richard LewisDigital Media Arts/Computer Science ChairMr. Lewis creates art that moves- both literally andfiguratively. He has devoted his life to producing animationand visual effects that not only entertain, but also affectothers in a positive way. For him, art is anything that goesbeyond physical reality to become something new that affects and alterspeople’s lives, if only for a moment.His diverse work history includes generating visual effects, titles, graphics,illustration, and matte paintings for numerous projects and television shows.As Chair of the Digital Media Arts and Computer Science Department at AUP, hisgoal is to help facilitate and sustain a cutting edge department. Because digitaltools are constantly evolving, Mr. Lewis aims to present his students with theknowledge and skills to work proactively, as well as the ability to adapt andthink outside of the box.
