Forensic EntomologyBy: Caitlin Walter and Megan Tufer

What is Forensic Entomology? Forensic Entomology is the use of the insects, and their arthropod relatives, that inhabitdecomposing remains to aid in legalinvestigations.

What Evidence is Analyzed? Evidence from insects are used to estimate the elapsed time since death,Entomologists may also be able to suggest that the body was moved afterdeath. Forensic Entomologists. Identify insects at various stages of their life cycle, such as eggs, larvae, and adults. Collect and preserve insects as evidence. Testify in court to explain insect-relatedevidence found at a crime scene

Types of Cases HomicideAbuseDrugsExample: Finding a body in the desert that is covered withcity-dwelling bugs can determine that the body was killed ina different location, then moved.

How Is Evidence Analyzed? Drugs By analysing the bodies of flesh-eating insects, forensicentomologists can determine whether drugs were used, and what they were. DNA Forensic scientists can extract the DNA from bloodconsumed by insects to place someone at the scene of acrime.

How is Evidence Analyzed? Murder Forensic entomologists study the kinds of insects found inand near bodices. By knowing the life cycles of thedifferent insects, and the stages of decomposition, scientists can determine the time since death. Abuse Insects can be used as evidence in human and animalabuse by flies laying eggs in untreated wounds.

Case Against Michael Rubenstein First trial was dismissed due to the lack of evidence proving the time of death ofhis familySecond trial began and the defendants dismissed claims to the estimated time ofdeath based on the fact that they don’t have hard physical evidence of pupaebeing on any of the bodiesMedical examiners released autopsy photo which showed that there were pupaein the little girls’ hairPresence of the pupae on the little girl helped the court to understand the time ofdeath of the girl and her family

Results of the case February 5th 2000 Michael Rubenstein was found guilty on all three accounts ofmurder of his familyHe was sentenced to death penalty Great case example because it shows thatforensic entomology can make or break acaseCase wouldn’t have been closed or solvedif it wasn’t for the presence of pupaeThe study of entomology helped bringjustice to the three deaths involved
