April 2014 – May 2014 IssueEditor’s MessageIn This Issue Editor’s MessageShow Chair Update2014 Specialty ShowResultsWinners CircleSpecialty CandidsBoard & OfficersClub CalendarNot even a torrential downpour that greeted us during setup andthroughout Friday evening and Sunday morning could dampen thespirits of members and exhibitors who attended our 123rd and 124thSpecialties. To start the weekend of festivities, the fun match washeld indoors with a pretty sizeable entry judged by our own JoanMulligan. Though it was raining cats and dogs outdoors, indoors wasruled by exuberant puppies. This was followed by a wonderfulwelcome party with lots of food and friendly banter among fellowDane lovers, some of whom we only get to see once a year.Once again raffle prizes were fantastic and our silent auction raiseda sizeable amount of money donated to the Great Dane Club ofAmerica’s Charitable Trust. As usual, the venue was a hit withexhibitors and judges. My heartfelt congratulations goes out to all thewinners and their proud owners. Plenty of kudos again to our showchair and assistant show chair, the various show committees and allclub members who made this year’s Specialty a resounding success.I am looking forward already to next year!Gary

Show Chair UpdateIt’s a Wrap!!!Our 2014 Specialty Shows are behind us – and we’d never have made it without your help! This year’sshows were dedicated to the memory of Jane Chopson. We hope we did her memory proudthrough the sportsmanship and fellowship of the weekend. In the paragraphs that follow, we mention a few highlights of the weekend and extend some thankyous. If we fail to mention your name, please forgive us. It’s just not possible to list everybody whohelped during the weekend. We’ll start with an extra big shout out to Kathryn Netser! Our grounds chairperson, Conley Netser, hadan emergency appendectomy a few days before the shows. Since he couldn’t be there on Friday tomanage ring setup, Kathryn was all over it! (We were thrilled to see Conley back on his feet Sunday, with both he and Kathryn working until everything was put away and the trailer locked up ‘til nextyear.)Everybody looks forward to the Friday afternoon events that kick off the show weekend! Kevin Forrestset up for the obedience/rally match and Laura Munro orchestrated the puppy match (whichincluded a last-minute move to the building due to rain). Our first-ever welcome party was a bigsuccess thanks to decorators/organizers/contributors Terri Burley-Hammond, Denise Matulich, SharonMcCrary, grill master Bruce Matulich (with a supporting role by Mick Galvin), and everybody whobrought yummy salads and other goodies to share and otherwise helped with organization andcleanup. A good time was had by all!Exhibitors were greeted with a welcome bag of goodies, thanks to Laura Craig. Thank you TimmiWilliams for getting up extra early to make sure there was hot coffee, juice and lots of other goodiesbefore the shows. Mick Galvin kept the sound system in check and pinch-hit by finding the NationalAnthem to play before each day’s show. Thanks also to Sue Dubie-Holbrook and Jenny Kenton, ourperformance chair people. They organized the event across the parking lot and ensured theexhibitors had a good time.A big thank you to our conformation ring stewards Bill Labiak and Sue Dubie-Holbrook for gettingexhibitors to the ring and ensuring the actual show ran smoothly. We’d be remiss if we didn’t give aspecial thanks to our judge’s liaison Mabel Labiak who was ringside all weekend long doing whateverneeded doing while keeping our judges and stewards fed, hydrated and comfortable.Thank you Dail Koehler for organizing the parade and collecting and sharing a bit about thehonorees – great to learn something about the dogs in the ring! And the personalized rosettes DeniseMatulich chose for parade entrants were beautiful and worthy of their accomplishments.Debi Romerosa worked overtime in soliciting a beautiful array of items and managing the silentauction tables – 1782 was raised for the GDCA Charitable Trust! Huge thanks to Lorrie Spencer andEverett Van Dyken for selecting and soliciting a whole bunch of awesome raffle prizes, selling tickets,

and organizing and manning the tables all weekend long. The prize raffle is a big money-maker forthe club, and it’s tough to recruit volunteers to oversee it – well done, Team! Denise Williams did anawesome job making sure the 50-50 raffle was successful and profitable: over 600 of 50-50 ticketswere sold!Challenge trophies were presented beautifully (thanks to Denise Williams and Brittany Williams). SamGillette and Everett Van Dyken worked hard soliciting donations for and selecting the really nicetrophies awarded to the winners. THANK YOU!!!Extra-special appreciation to these guys who were everywhere, doing whatever grunt work neededdoing: Kevin Forrest and Gary Romerosa. Big thanks, too, to Lou Gundell who had to work at his realjob most of the weekend but made a special trip from Carson City to help with teardown Sundayafternoon. Other setup/teardown helpers deserving special thanks include Mick Galvin, Bob Purdy, and Michael Wilcoxen. Last but not least, a big thank you to Everett Van Dyken for storing the club’strailer all year long and getting it to and from the show site. Please join us at Royce Farms on June 21st at 11am when we meet to officially review the shows. Asthe show chairs, we’d really like to hear what you liked, didn’t like, and your suggestions to make theshows even better next year. We hope to see you there! Thanks again!!!Megan and Kate
