ARE YOU ANXIOUS?I remember the time I was stuckat the top of a huge ferris wheel. There I was, at the very top of thegiant wheel, alone, not knowingwhen the broken machinery wouldbe repaired. Powerless, with zerocontrol over my circumstances, Ifelt anxiety creeping into my body. Then I remembered a Bible passagefrom Isaiah: “You will keep inperfect peace him whose mind issteadfast, because he trusts in you”(Isaiah 26:3). I keep remindingGod of His promise, and my anxietymorphed into calm acceptanceof my situation. After perhaps15 minutes the ferris wheel wasrepaired, and I was “rescued” frommy 100-foot high perch. Are you anxious about anything? Our culture today besieges us withinformation, coming at us from alldirections: video clips of Muslimskilling people, volcanoes eruptingin Iceland, epidemics in Africa, earthquakes in China, billboardswith giant lawyer faces reminding usof impending accidents, shootings inLos Angeles, and allegations aboutcorruption in the Internal RevenueService. All this informationproduces a kind of ambient anxiety, like the annoying background noisein a restaurant. One way of copingwith all the unpleasant informationis to never watch the news, listento the radio, or read a newspaper. But is choosing to be ignorant ofthe world around us really helpful?Concerning politics, the Greekphilosopher Plato once said, “Oneof the penalties for refusing toparticipate in politics is that youend up being governed by yourinferiors.” One study revealed thatonly 50% of Christian pastors areeven registered to vote, and that only25% of people of faith actually votein elections in the United States.Choosing to be ignorant of theworld around us is not the solution! We have a civic – and biblical –obligation to choose, support andpray for government leaders whoare not only qualified but who havea moral compass. We cannot hidefrom the world, but must do allwe can in our sphere of influenceto ensure a just and compassionateworld. And that puts us right backinto the arena of problems, andpotential anxiety.God tells us through his apostlePaul: “Do not be anxious aboutanything, but in everything,by prayer and petition withthanksgiving, present your requeststo God. And the peace of God,which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and yourminds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians4:6-7). Here then is the call tofaith–faith in our loving Father-Godwho has given His Son for us on thecross. He will not fail us. Let meclose with an example. Imagine, ifyou can, the feelings of a dog that isbeing shipped by air to its master ina new home. Strange people placehim in an unfamiliar cage. He isthen kept in a dark place for manyhours, listening to unfamiliar noises. He is distressed. He whimpersquietly. And yet, unknown to him, he isperfectly safe during his journey.Like that imaginary dog, we may October 2014be anxious on our journey. Butunlike the dog, we can deal with ouranxiety by trusting God—claiminghis promises in faith and givingthanks in all circumstances. We may not be able to perfectlyclaim this treasure of relief fromanxiety, but it is ours to have—and to share. Think about yourunsaved neighbor, or the unsavedin the neighborhood of our churchbuilding. There are many people“out there” who do not know that“peace of God which transcendsall understanding.” Everybodystruggles with anxiety from time totime. Be alert for the opportunitiesto share that peace. And do it!Bruce Lieske for the Missions andEvangelism TeamSunday, October 266-7:15pmBring yourself, your family, and your friends/neighbors foran evening of FREE fun andentertainment! HOW TO MAKEA GIFT WITHSAVINGS BONDSMany of us have investedthrough the years in U.S. Savings Bonds. Many are alsofearful of cashing them in or giving them away for fearof having to report taxable income.Savings bonds are typically taxed once they are cashedin, reissued to another person, or reach maturity. Hereare three options you might consider that will allow youto support your congregation and the LCMS ministriesyou love with those savings bonds and help you withthose tax issues.Redeem the savings bonds and use the cash to make agift to Lutheran ministry, designated in any way youwish. If you itemize, the charitable deduction will helpto offset the tax burden.Bequeath your bonds—leave those bonds to your churchor favorite Lutheran ministry by putting that bequest inyour will. The designated ministry will receive the fullvalue of the savings bonds, which might otherwise bereduced by income taxes. There will be no tax liabilityfor you or your heirs.Leave the bonds to a charitable trust at your death. This kind of trust will first benefit your loved oneswith payments over a period of time, then the balancewill come to the Lutheran church, school, university, seminary or social ministry you have designated, according to your wishes.HOLY LAND EXPERIENCETuesday, November 11Park Hours: 10am-6pmTickets must be picked up day of event from 9:45-11amTicket prices include all activities/shows day of theevent, and free parking 40 per person (regular 50)Thrivent Member and 1 guest: 30(up to 4 per household)Children 6-18: 25; Children 3-5: 10All tickets must be ordered and paid by October 8For information, contact Darlene Kaiser atdarlenek149@gmail.com.OCTOBER IS PUMPKIN PATCH TIMEPumpkins are being deliveredon Saturday morning, October18.
