Skirt Panels – Q 409 4558 Maintenance of Tracks & Skirt Panels8.2Skirt Panels – Q 409 4551Description and Mode of OperationThe skirt panels (1) are those parts of the balustrade skirt facing the steps (2). They serve as lateral guidesof the steps (guide pads (3)) in their advance track.Due to the risk of accidents (wedging), the surfaces and joints of the skirt panels must be absolutelysmooth. In order to reduce friction resistance, they are provided with a black antifriction coating. The lower reinforcing C-profiles (4) of the skirt panels (1) serve as counterguides for the step chainrollers (5) (only in the inclined part of the escalator).Fig. 455-011)2)3)4)5)Skirt panelStepGuide padC-profilesStep chain rollerFoggy Bottom StationWashington Metropolitan Area Transit AuthorityOperation & Maintenance ManualSchindler 9700 Escalators8-14

Skirt Panels – Q 409 4558 Maintenance of Tracks & Skirt Panels2Maintenance2.1Checking the Lateral Play of the StepsHint!Required during commissioning and following a step crashAccording to EN 115, the gap (S) between the skirt panels (1) and the steps (2) must not exceed– 4 mm on one side;– a total of 7 mm on both sides. If required, correct displaced steps or readjust the skirt panels.Hint! When readjusting skirt panels, check the play between the guide pads (3) and the skirt panels (1):approx. 0.5-1 mm on each side2.2CleaningThoroughly clean the guideways of the guide pads (3) on the skirt panels (1).Hint!This is done from the step gap which is moved on bit by bit with the maintenance operatingpanel.2.3LubricationAutomatic lubrication:For more detailed information, see Maintenance Instructions Q 409 598, Guide Pad Lubrication(Lubrication Step)Manual lubrication:Apply a thin film of an adequate lubricant (see the following table) with a brush exclusively in the area ofthe gliding surface of the guide pads (3).BPESSOKLÜBERMOBILSHELLEnergreaseLS 3Beacon 3KlüberplexBEM 41-132MobiluxEP2AlvaniaR3Foggy Bottom StationWashington Metropolitan Area Transit AuthorityOperation & Maintenance ManualSchindler 9700 Escalators8-15

Skirt Contacts – Q 409 6488 Maintenance of Tracks & Skirt Panels8.3Skirt Contacts – Q 409 6481Description and Mode of OperationIn the area of the transition curves (both at the drive and tension stations) microswitches (1) are positionedat the back of the skirt panels (2) on both sides of the step band. If objects get caught between the steps andthe skirt panels in these areas, the resulting deflection of the skirt panel causes the microswitch to switchoff the escalator. The escalator is stopped before caught objects reach the combplate, which would result inmore severe damage.Fig. 648-011)2)MicroswitchSkirt panelFoggy Bottom StationWashington Metropolitan Area Transit AuthorityOperation & Maintenance ManualSchindler 9700 Escalators8-16

Skirt Contacts – Q 409 6488 Maintenance of Tracks & Skirt Panels2Maintenance2.1Functional CheckHint! Can be done with the maintenance operating panelMove the step gap into the area of the skirt contacts (1).Exert high pressure (40–50 kg) in the area of the contact to bend the skirt panel (2) to the outside. Thecontact (1) must be actuated.Fig. 648-02Hint!It is useful to know the exact position of the skirt contacts (e.g. distance between the contact andthe tips of the comb teeth, distance between the skirt panel joint and the contact).Error codes:"E 12" for left contact at drive station"E 1F" for left contact at tension station"E E0" for right contact at drive station"E E0" for right contact at tension stationHint! It is not necessary to reset the contact, since the microswitch is self-resetting.Foggy Bottom StationWashington Metropolitan Area Transit AuthorityOperation & Maintenance ManualSchindler 9700 Escalators8-17

Step Upthrust Contacts – Q 409 7098 Maintenance of Tracks & Skirt Panels8.4Step Upthrust Contacts – Q 409 7091Description and Mode of OperationThe step upthrust contacts are mounted in the track block of the tension station (1) and the track block ofthe drive station (2). This contact disconnects the escalator as soon as a step is lifted due to an externalimpact when leaving the incline and entering the transition curve. When the step is lifted, the step hook (3) is pressed against the upthrust arm (5) which is prestressed with acompression spring (4). When the force increases, the upthrust arm and the contact (6) mounted on theupthrust arm are lifted against the spring force. The release bracket (9) actuates the contact and theescalator is shut down.Foggy Bottom StationWashington Metropolitan Area Transit AuthorityOperation & Maintenance ManualSchindler 9700 Escalators8-19

Step Upthrust Contacts – Q 409 7098 Maintenance of Tracks & Skirt Panels2Maintenance2.1Functional CheckRun the step gap into the area of the step upthrust contact.Lift the upthrust arm (5) by hand. The contact (6) must be activated, and it should not be possible to startthe escalator.Error codes:"E 1D" for step upthrust contact, top right"E 7B" for step upthrust contact, top left"E 88" for step upthrust contact, bottom left"E D8" for step upthrust contact, bottom rightHint! The compressed length of the spring (4) should measure 18 mm. The spring can be readjusted bymeans of the setscrew (8).2.2Contact SettingThe contact (6) should abut the release bracket (9) without play.Fig. 709-024)5)6)9)2.3Compression springUpthrust armContactRelease bracketLubricationLubricate the compression spring (4) and the drilled hole of the upthrust arm (5) (see Fig. 709-02).Foggy Bottom StationWashington Metropolitan Area Transit AuthorityOperation & Maintenance ManualSchindler 9700 Escalators8-21
