ŠRI SARASWATIŠri Saraswati is the šakti or the power or energy behind Lord Brahma, the Creator. She is the embodiment of the Divine Mother in Her manifestation as theGoddess of Learning. She enables Her votaries to pursue and achieve the goal oflife, i.e. Self-Realization. She is the presiding Deity of all branches of knowledgeand is variously known as Sakala Kalã Vãni, Vidyã Swarupini, Vãk Devi etc. all ofwhich convey Her most prominent attribute as the Goddess who confers on herdevotees, felicity with words or skills for realizing the Supreme Knowledge, thegoal of human life.Out of an infinite number of species in the universe, the Divine Mother hasbestowed the ability to speak on human beings only, with the specific objective ofenabling them to acquire the Supreme Knowledge by properly utilizing words.Accordingly, those blessed souls who have an understanding of the purpose ofthis special Divine gift, are inclined to utilize words, both spoken and written, infurtherance of this goal only. Out of these mahãtmas (great souls) a chosen fewlike Mooka Kavi or Kãidasa or Ãdi Šankara etc. receive Her blessings in fullmeasure and compose beautiful and profound poems, by reading which theentire humanity is benefited.Šri Saraswati is usually depicted with four arms, seated on a hamsa (swan), clad ina white garment, carrying aksha mãla and pustaka (book) respectively in two armsand holding a veena by the other two arms. Her white garment stands for purityand those blessed by Her will have crystal clear intellect enabling them to easilygain the Supreme Knowledge. Each letter of the alphabet denotes a distinctsound and Aksha Mãla or ‘garland of letters’ is made of all individual letters inthe alphabet. This garland signifies that She resides in each letter or sounddenoted by it. The pustaka (book) in Her hand symbolically represents thecollection of all words made out of these letters and sounds. Among allthe musical instruments, the music generated by Veena, is considered supreme. Her two vãhanas (vehicles) are a swan and a peacock. The swan symbolizes vivekaor discrimination (between reality and unreality) because of its ability to separatepure milk from water. Similarly, a peacock represents the multifarioussense-attractions in this world and by riding a peacock Šri Saraswati shows us thatwe should have complete mastery over our senses and its attractions. The ninth and last day of Devi Navarãtri is a special day for the worship ofŠri Saraswati. This day is also known as Ãyudha Pooja Day. On this day devoteesplace in the altar books or other instruments of their respective occupations orlivelihood and worship Šri Saraswati, invoking Her in the books or instrumentsplaced in the altar and seeking Her blessings. On the following day (Vijaya Dašami), after worshipping the books or instrumentsonce again, devotees remove those from the altar and re-commence their pursuitof Knowledge in their respective fields. Vijaya Dašami Day is considered veryauspicious for Vidyãrambham or initiating children to learning and Šri Saraswati issure to lead those children to victory and success.5
