Multilin 869 – Motor Protection SystemProtection & ControlStator DifferentialAs part of the 8 Series family, the Multilin 869 provides superiorprotection and control. The 869 offers comprehensive protection andcontrol solutions for medium and large motors for various applications. It contains a full range of selectively enabled, self contained protectionand control elements.Motor Thermal ModelMany motor failures are directly or indirectly related to, or causedby, extensive heating of the different motor parts involved inelectromechanical operation. Proven through several generations ofGE’s Multilin motor relays, an enhanced thermal model is used in the869 relay with seven major features: Motor thermal limit curves - NEMA standard, voltage dependentand customized motor curvesDifferential protection is considered as the first line of protection forinternal phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground faults for medium andlarge motors to provide sensitive and fast clearing protection againstwinding faults including turn-to-turn faults. Multilin 869 – Motor Protection SystemVFD-Driven MotorsThe Multilin 869 provides protection for motors fed through VFDs(Variable Frequency Drives). A wide range of the frequency tracking(3-72Hz) allows the 869 to track the motor frequency and adjust itssampling rate to accurately measure phasors. An advanced algorithmallows switchable current and voltage tracking in case VFD is bypassed. To provide even more accurate phasor measurement, there is anoption that filters ripples in phasors due to harmonics for major motorfunctions. Additionally, users may indicate a starting VFD frequencythat helps the device to track the motor frequency faster and eliminateunnecessary delay in the averaging filter during motor startup that cancause delayed protection operation during motor failures.Reduced Voltage StartingThe Multilin 869 can control the transition of a reduced voltage starterfrom reduced to full voltage based on “Current Only”, “Current andTime”, or “Current or Timer”. During this process, the relay continuouslymonitors the motor current to ensure an effective transition.Multilin 869 – VFD Driven Motor Protection with or without bypass switchFunctional Block DiagramDEVICE #6FUNCTIONDEVICE #FUNCTIONDEVICE #14Under speed50PMechanical Jam19Motor Starter50PMotor Overload Alarm27PPhase Undervoltage50PMotor Short Circuit32PDirectional Power37Undercurrent50P/N/G37PUnderpower50 238Bearing Temperature46Current Unbalance474951VFUNCTIONDEVICE #FUNCTIONVoltage Restrained Phase TimeOvercurrent67PPhase Directional Overcurrent55Power Factor67NNeutral Directional OvercurrentPhase OvervoltageOver/Under frequencyPhase/Neutral/GroundInstantaneous Overcurrent59P81 O/U59NNeutral Overvoltage86Lock-outNegative SequenceInstantaneous Overcurrent59 2Negative Sequence Overvoltage87SPercent DifferentialAcceleration TimeAuxiliary OvervoltageFuse Failure50LR59XVTFFPhase/Neutral/Ground TimeOvercurrent66Maximum starting rateVoltage Reversal51P/N/G66Time Between StartsThermal Model51GMotor Ground FaultGEDigitalEnergy.comRTD ProtectionThermal Inhibit

Multilin 869 – Motor Protection SystemTwo-Speed Thermal ModelUnderpower ProtectionThe two-speed motor protection feature allows for the protectionof motors that can operate at two different speeds. The algorithmintegrates the heating at each speed into one thermal model. The Underpower element in the 869 is based on the three-phasereal power (kW) measured from the phase currents and voltages.Underpower may be used to detect loss of load conditions. This maybe used for more sensitive detection of load loss or pump cavitation ordetecting process related issues. The Multilin 869 automatically determines which settings should beactive at any given time considering a transition from speed one tospeed two within a period of time. The device has all required logic andtime delays to safely transfer speeds.Voltage and Frequency ProtectionThe voltage and frequency protection functions detect abnormal systemconditions like over/under voltage, over/under frequency and/or phasereversal that are potentially hazardous to the motor.Undercurrent ProtectionThe undercurrent protection element provides the ability to trip themotor due to external conditions that can cause the load being drivenby the motor to drop below a pre-set level. This function is used toprotect pumps from loss of suction, fans from loss of airflow due to aclosed damper or a conveyor system due to a broken belt.Motor Start SupervisionProtection of Motors with High-Inertia LoadsThe voltage dependent overload curve feature is tailored to protectmotors which are used in high inertia load applications.Voltage is continually monitored when the motor is started and duringacceleration. The thermal limit curve is then adjusted accordingly. Thisenables the Multilin 869 to distinguish between a locked rotor condition,an accelerating condition and a running condition.RTD ProtectionMotor start supervision consists of the following features: TimeBetween-Starts, Start-per-Hour, Restart Time and Start Inhibit. Theseelements are intended to guard the motor against excessive startingduty, which is normally defined by the motor manufacturer in additionto the thermal damage curves. The Emergency Restart enables the userto reset the Motor start supervisions in case of process needs. The start inhibit function prevents the starting of a motor when themotor is too hot and does not have a sufficient amount of thermalcapacity available to allow a start without being tripped offline. In caseof emergency, the thermal capacity used and motor start supervisiontimers can be reset to allow a hot motor to start. The Multilin 869 supports up to 12 programmable RTD inputs that can beconfigured for an Alarm or Trip. The RTD voting option gives additionalreliability to ignore any RTD failures. The RTDs can be assigned to a group for monitoring the stator, bearingand ambient temperatures.RTD Bias MaximumRTD Thermal Capacity Used (%)1009080706050403020RTDBias Center PointRTDBias Minimum100-50050100150200250Maximum Stator RTD Temperature ( C)RTD bias curveGEDigitalEnergy.com7

The motor can be tripped if themotor does not reach a running condition within the programmablemotor acceleration time.Synchronous Motor ProtectionFor synchronous motors with excitation system control that offersfield winding protection, the Multilin 869 offers comprehensive statorprotection functions in addition to features such as power factor basedpull out protection and reactive power based alarm and trip functions.21003104Adaptive Protection5The Multilin 869 offers effective, reliable management of motors. Withdynamic, sensitive settings, the 869 provides secure and dependableprotection. With six setting groups, the 869 provides the sensitivesettings range and groups required to ensure no compromise is made tomeet changing system conditions. These setting groups can be enabledautomatically or manually via digital Inputs, virtual inputs or remotecommunications to address system needs, ensuring greater systemreliability and efficiency.1.00.10.51.010100MULTIPLE OF PER UNIT CURRENTFlexCurves For applications that require greater flexibility, FlexCurves can be usedto define custom curve shapes.
