THE GREAT M2MIGRATION OF 2014by LeRoy Cook, with The TravelersOn Tour WithA New Citation M2Every true adventure begins in the imagination. Picture this: youlove to see the world, experience different cultures, have your mindchanged by new ways of seeing things. Africa, the home of greatlions, graceful giraffes and elusive leopards, has irresistible appeal. You haven’t even imagined yet that a hippo will be bathing in theriver outside your colonial tent while you rest after a day of safari. And you see yourself wandering the through the ghostly city ofPrague, with the imprint of centuries of change in Europe, andyou want to do it all in style. The real promise of travel is the gift of faith that it bestows, faith inthe unknown; after all, you do have the keys to a brand-new Citation M2,purchased in March 2014, and 2,000 jet-flying hours. Our pilot had previouslyflown a Citation Mustang with the Garmin G1000-based cockpit. Hisearlier-acquired C525 type rating needed only some differences training toreactivate, bringing him up to speed on the M2’s G3000 touch-screen suite. Our adventurer had made similar trips to Europe and South America, with his steadfast girlfriend, co-owner, companion and co-pilot, shared withfriends who came along for various legs of the journey. Thus, the enterprisingpair set out in May, for a series of remarkable self-guided travels over the nextfour months. Three separate itineraries were developed, with interspersedmulti-week breaks so they could airline home for business. In all, 72 hoursof Citation M2 flying was accomplished during 10 weeks of dedicated travel,a great way to learn the airplane’s newly-found capabilities.6 TWIN & TURBINEJANUARY 2015JANUARY 2015 TWIN & TURBINE 7

A fortnight later, the odysseyresumed with a well-plannedAfrican sortie, accompanied bytwo friends. The initial outboundwas a 100-minute hop to Prague, leading them to stops in Aqaba,Djibouti and on to Nairobi, Kenya.Radio communications providedsome good entertainment for thepilots during the early stages of theAfrica leg. Thick Arabic accents anddialects often had the two airmenasking each other, ‘Did you get that?’There were several ominous longsilences from ATC, leading up toThe Trips BeginHis business and personal pursuitshad made many contacts in othercountries, friends he could rely onduring the course of his travels. The first leg of the summer’s M2adventure was from Orlando, Floridaup to Brunswick, Maine, followedby a flight northeast to Goose Bay,Labrador, the jumping-off point forthe trip across the Atlantic. Withaccommodating winds aloft, the hop to Reykjavik inIceland was accomplishedeasily and the M2’s firstEuropean landing wasmade in Amsterdam, TheNetherlands. After somesightseeing, the jet was flownto historic Biggin Hill airportoutside London, where itwould remain while dutycalled the owners home.“Leaving the Mara Reserve wasbittersweet, but we had to move on.Spectacular Victoria Falls, or VicFalls, as it is affectionately known,is 300 feet taller than Niagara’sdrop and is shared by Zambia andZimbabwe. a great city to visit that it willbecome their “go to” stop in thefuture. And with friends in Icelandand Greenland, they were able toexperience volcanos in Iceland andglaciers in Greenland. Stunningsites in both countries. Then it wastime to head back to North America, landing at Goose Bay and reenteringthe U.S. at Brunswick, Maine. A sidetrip to Newport was made beforereturning to Sanford, Florida inearly September. What an Odyssey! The M2From a certification standpoint, the Citation M2 is a Cessna 525, thesame model designation that wasused back in 1993 with the originalCitationJet, later becoming the CJ1and CJ1 . With the appearance ofthe CJ2 and CJ3 and the Mustanglight jet, there began to be littlemarketing justification for thesmallest CJ, and it was phasedout the line. However, it soon became evidentthat a gap existed between theentry-level Mustang and the CJ2.The CJ1 would be too expensiveto build in its original form, butwith some pricing concessions the525 airframe could be revived asa step-up from the Mustang, to becalled the M2. What was changed? For starters, the Collins ProLine21 flight deck was exchanged for aGarmin G3000 suite, which involvedmuch more than just a differentsupplier. The CJ1 ’s ProLine gearwas remotely located in the nosebay, while the G3000 hardware goesmostly in the cockpit; this causeda rearward shift in C.G., so a slightballast may be required up frontwhen flown by a single pilot. Withnormal loads, there’s no need forballast if some baggage is loaded inthe nose. A nose-mounted auxiliarybattery was made available to powerup the M2’s avionics before starting. The M-2’s Williams FJ44-1AP-21engines are rated the same asthe CJ1 ’s FJ44-1AP, but FADECenhancements boost thrust ataltitude by 10%, and the overhaulcycle of 4,000 hours was a 500-hourincrease from the previous engine,to eventually be raised to 5,000hours. No thrust attenuators wereneeded for ground operations.Externally, the M2’s majorvisual distinction from the CJ1is the addition of a set of smallwinglets; the engine pylons werealso reclocked. These, along withmore usable thrust, boosted maxcruise speed to 405 knots andbrought maximum range up to1,400 NM. As with the earlier CJ’s,bleed air windshield heat remained, supplemented by an alcohol spraybar for the left side, and the hot wingwas retained, with pneumatic bootson the horizontal stabilizer. An aft lav, with solid doors, isan option for the M2, with a beltedseat. New LED lighting is used in theM2 cabin, along with the optionalClairity wireless entertainmentsystem. Up front, the center pedestalis slimmer, compared to the CJ,and the instrument panel wasslightly tilted.Overall, the Citation M2 representsa good value and a good step-upchoice for Mustang owners seekingmore of everything. Embraer’sPhenom 100 was the obvious reasonCessna chose to offer a gap-fillermodel in the Citation line. The M2has become an excellent option forthe owner/pilot looking for a lightjet upgrade1st Source BankFull Page4/C AdRecapThe owner of the spanking-newCitation M2 had done his homeworkand had employed the resourcesof Air Journey’s trip-planningdepartment, which he calls his“Guardian Angel”.The Rocket Route flight planningwebsite is an excellent help inEurope, he told us. His bestresources, however, were a long listof friends and business contacts fromprevious travels, always available tolend a hand in their locale. AmericanExpress’ travel agency does a greatjob of finding accommodations inEurope, he said. He also reportedthat the Honeywell AeroWaveinternet service on board the M2worked well, at a reasonable cost. With prior experience andplanning, and with the capabilityof the new Citation M2, a multicontinent excursion is possible andpractical. We AlmostMissedIn a Lear 40, it‘s a very short28 minute, 177 nm-mile tripfrom Skagit Regional (BVS),just north of Seattle, to HillsboroAirport (HIO), west of Portland. Aswe pass over the volcano-flattenedmountaintop of Saint Helens andstart our descent, Jeff H (the pilotflying) and I find ourselves wishingwe could delay arrival by anotherhour or so.Although VFR conditions werepredicted for our arrival when weplanned the flight, we are nowjust six minutes from the InitialApproach Point (IAP) and HIOis reporting fog, ceiling variable100–200 feet and visibility varyingbetween ¼ and ½ mile. But, theweather otherwise is pretty decent, with tops at 1,500 feet and calmwinds. In addition, HIO has a good(200 and ½) ILS approach to runway13, with the surrounding terrainrelatively flat. The missed approachprocedure is also quite simple, aclimbing right turn back to the VORfor a hold, where we could reconsiderour options. Unfortunately, no otheraircraft have tried the approach thismorning, so we are going to be thebrave guinea pigs. After a long respite of fairly goodweather, this is my second approachto minimums in two days, includingone yesterday into Juneau, Alaskawith a Lear
