Anton,Andrew A. Athens, George K. Chimples, Peter M. Dionand Michael Jarharis. George P. Kokalis, also a FoundingMichael Jaharis, Andrew A. Athens, George K. Chimples, Arthur C. Anton &Peter M. DionMember, passed away June 24, 2008. Another FoundingMember, Thomas A. Athens, died in June of 2002. Thelatter two will be awarded posthumously.The Award was established by the Archbishop IakovosLeadership 100 Endowment Fund, Incorporated in honorof its visionary founder, the late Archbishop Iakovos, and isbestowed on outstanding Greek and Greek American leaders who have excelled in the pursuit of their vocation andexhibited the gift of leadership. In special circumstances,and in the spirit of Philhellenism, the Award is given toGeorge P. Kokalis with Archbishop Iakovos the Visionary Founderof Leadership 100an outstanding leader, regardless of religion or nationalbackground, who has exemplified the universal values andideals of Orthodoxy and Hellenism.Previous recipients were George J. Tenet, Senator PaulS. Sarbanes and Yanni in 2003; Melina Kanakaredes andJohn D. Negroponte in 2004; Senator Olympia J. Snowein 2005; Dimitris L. LEADERSHIP 100 100LEADERSHIPto Meet Challenge toContinue GrantsELECTS NEW MEMBERSTO EXECUTIVE COMMITTEEAND BOARD OF TRUSTEESThe Leadership 100 Executive Committee, meeting inNew York on October 24, acted in response to the financialcrisis gripping the nation and its effect on the organizationby temporarily suspending its grant program as requiredby its regulations in order to preserve the more than 50million of contributions held inviolate in the EndowmentFund. The regulations (Article IX, A.1) stipulate that grantscan be made only from a portion of the earnings from thatFund. All future grants will be made from the newly-formedLeadership 100 Grant Fund, to be headed by Charles H.Cotros, until such time as earnings from the EndowmentFund warrant a resumption of the distribution of funds forpurposes of grants.The Leadership 100 Grant Fund was immediately formed after Michael Jaharis, a Founder of the organization, issued acombined challenge grant of 500,000, along with anotherunnamed donor, to raise new funds in excess of 1 million inorder to continue grants in support of the National Ministries of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and the Leadership 100 Scholarship for Excellence Program established atHoly Cross School of Theology.Stephen G. Yeonas, Chairman of Leadership 100, appointedCotros, a member of the Executive Committee, as Chairmanof the Leadership 100 Grant Fund. Cotros, who serves as adirector of Allied Waste Industries, Inc. and AmerisourceBergen Corporation, was previously interim Chief ExecutiveOfficer and Chairman of the Board of Allied. He began hiscareer in the food service industry in 1960 with Tri-StateGeneral Food Supply and after Tri-State merged with SYSCOin 1974, he served in various positions, rising to Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2000until he retired from SYSCO in 2002.In accepting the appointment made by our Chairman,Cotros said, “In view of the financial crisis confronting thenation at this time and the effect it has on Leadership 100,we need to do whatever possible to raise funds for theNational Ministries and to secure funds for scholarships toHoly Cross Theological School which has the vast responsibility of preparing young men to become priests in theGreek Orthodox communities.”4Charles H. Cotros, Chairman of newly-formedLeadership 100 Grant FundThe Executive Committee, after hearing a report of theInvestment Committee on the effects of market volatilityon the Endowment Fund, acted in order to preserve themore than 50 million of contributions held inviolate in theEndowment Fund. Leadership 100 has operated on regulations that grants can be made from distributions based ona formula that averages the earnings from that Fund. Allfuture grants will be made from the Leadership 100 GrantFund until such time as the Endowment Fund rises abovethe inviolate amount and earnings from the Fund meetthe requirements governed by that formula.The Executive Committee and Board of Trustees met atthe Harvard Club in New York City to address the current financial crisis, review plans for the 25th AnniversaryCelebration Conference to take place February 5-8, 2009in Puerto Rico, to assess progress in the 25th AnniversaryNational Campaign and to elect members to the ExecutiveCommittee and the Board of Trustees.George D. Behrakis, Chairman of the 25th AnniversaryCelebration Committee, said the program has been setfor the Conference and registration packets have beensent out with a December 15 deadline. John A. Payiavlas,former Chairman, and Constantine G. Vice Chairman, whoserve as Co-Chairmen of the 25th Anniversary NationalCampaign reported that 50 new members had joinedLeadership 100, bringing the total membership to 798.The Nominating Committee, headed by FoundingMember Peter M. Dion, reported on a slate of nomineesfor openings on the Executive Committee and Board ofTrustees, including filling one vacancy. All nominees wereelected by the Board of Trustees, as follows: ExecutiveCommittee: Angelo J. Coutris; Eugenia Hasiotis andKassandra Romas, replacing George D. 50 NEW MEMBERSFOR 25TH ANNIVERSARYLeadership 100 members and prospects, 100 in all,celebrated at Kellari’s Parea in the Gramercy Park section ofBrothers George, James & Peter Pantelidis co-hostsof the event together with Archbishop DemetriosNew York City on Friday, October 24, as eight new membersjoined the organization, putting the 25th Anniversary NationalCampaign at 50 new members, culminating in a series ofmembership recruitment meetings in Cleveland, Philadelphiaand Boston. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios offeredhis Paternal love and support to Leadership 100 at the NewYork event, stressing the need for all those gathered to makeLeadership 100 a priority so that we may continue our support to the National Ministries of the Greek Orthodox Churchin America. Peter J. Pappas, Membership Chairman for the Direct Archdiocesan District and co-owner of the restaurant withAngelo J. Coutris, Christine Kondoleon,Kassandra Romas, and new members: Don andConstantine AvgerinosJames, George and Peter Pantelidis (members of Leadership100), served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
