In addition, you will be able to understand thedynamic interdependency between all elements of the urban environment. By the end of the course, youwill not only have gained new knowledge but equally important, you will have acquired new tools of how toput new as well as existing knowledge into a new perspective.More specifically by the end of the course you should know: how to identify and analyze political intentions/design strategies within the urban environmenthow to reflect about policy, design and use of the urban environment, and the interdependentrelation between these.how to develop a ‘personal livability encyclopedia’ based on the information of the lectures and thepersonal findings of the field tripshow to convert these findings into a set of strategic tools for urban livabilityStrategies for Urban Livability DIS – Danish Institute for Study Abroad Disciplines: Sociology, Urban Design, Urban Studies

Classroom lectures will be supported by weekly field trips on bicycle oron foot. The teaching approach is that 1:1 learning and first hand experiences will provide a higher qualityunderstanding of the complex nature of the course topics.Strategies for Urban Livability DIS – Danish Institute for Study Abroad Disciplines: Sociology, Urban Design, Urban Studies

Final SyllabusField StudiesLectures will be supported by weekly field trips by bicycle. All topics will be covered both by literature, lectures and field trips. The field trips will include mapping and observation exercises. All courseassignments will be based in these findings and investigations. The individual student notebook/sketchbook will be a central element in the learning experience. The notebook/sketch book will collectinformation, both notes from readings, lectures and the field trip exercises, this way producing a personal‘livability encyclopedia’.Wednesday, 1st February 2017 (13.00-17.00)Wednesday, 5th April 2017 (8:30-12:30)Expectations of the StudentsAll students are expected to be independent learners/thinkers, good observers, and capable of riding abicycle. The academic content of the lectures will be substantial but the learning objective is primarily theability to translate that academic knowledge into useable applicable knowledge using the city as the urbanlaboratory for this. Students are expected to be able to conduct individual observation exercises, as well asstorytelling exercises and what-if-scenario assignments. Students are expected to be smart and imaginativein relation to the exercises and assignments as well as sensible and sensitive in relation to lectures and fieldtrips. There are times to discuss and create and there are times to look and listen.Team spirit: All students are expected to be helpful and pay attention to your fellow classmates, especiallyin relation of the field trips and mapping/observation exercises. Sharing information and experiences ishighly encouraged: together we know more.Evaluation15%Engaged Participation30%Assignment 1 & 2 (15% each) - Mapping, Observational and Creative Exercises15%Assignment 3 - Paper on Policy vs Reality: Public Space vs. Public Life40%Final Assignment - Project on Applied LivabilityEach student will be graded on the level of engagement in the class discussion and conversations in relationto lectures as well as the field trips. The mapping and observation exercises in the city’s urban spaces willbe graded on the quality of the information gathered rather than a preciseness of the notation/sketchingtechniques. No former drawing/diagramming skills are required. The findings from the exercises will formthe base of information from which the final paper will be created. To be eligible for a passing grade in thisclass, students must complete all of the assigned work.Disability and Resource StatementAny student who has a need for accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact theOffice of Academic Support (acadsupp@dis.dk) to coordinate this. In order to receive accommodations, students should inform the instructor of approved DIS accommodations within the first two weeks ofclasses.PoliciesAttendanceYou are expected to attend all DIS classes when scheduled. If you miss two classes the Director of Teachingand Learning, and the Director of Student Affairs will be notified and they will follow-up with you to makesure that all is well. Absences will jeopardize your grade and your standing at DIS. Allowances will be madein cases of illness, but you will need to provide a doctor’s note.Strategies for Urban Livability DIS – Danish Institute for Study Abroad Disciplines: Sociology, Urban Design, Urban Studies
