IntroductionThe theme for 2015 is ‘Locally Grown’.“To make a place, is to make a domain thathelps people know where they are, and byextension, know who they are.”Charles W. Moore FAIAAs a ‘progeny’ of Charles Moore, I havebeen intrigued by place-making. I imagineyou have similar aspirations: how does onecreate something that is globally inspiringand locally relevant?6 AIA COD Conference, Providence 2015Norway – International ConferenceNorway is a country with a smallpopulation whose economy historicallyrelied on fishing and farming. Their rural, natural environment has been, and still is,a dominant influence on Norwegians andtheir architecture. Their recent oil boomhas brought unprecedented wealth whichhas helped fund projects from culturalbuildings to housing. We will see how theirdevotion to nature and recent internationalattention is fueling Norwegian architectsto develop their own distinct version ofmodern architecture.Providence – National ConferenceProvidence, on the other hand, is forgingforward on a shoe-string, yet it too providescompelling examples of how locally-inspired architecture, planning, and designcan lead the rebirth of a place and helpdefine its spirit.Jim Childress FAIA2015 Chair - AIA Committee on DesignPartner - Centerbrook Architects
