Andso, the priests ofArcheparchyofPhiladelphia, along withArchbishopSorokagathered together toparticipate in workshopswith an agenda presentedbyBishopKenNovakowski, Eparch ofNewWestminster,Canada, and Fr. AndriyOnuferko, of the Eparchyof Toronto and SpiritualBishop KenNovakowskiFr. AndriyOnuferkoDirector of Holy SpiritSeminary,Ottawa,Ontario. This agendafocused upon the clergyof our Archeparchybecoming the leaders andmotivators, who will helpenliven our parishchurches to be, whereanyone who wants to, canexperience not merely,religion and ritual, butwhere all people can cometo encounter the livingChrist to be saved,nourished, forgiven,healed, consoled, andrenewed by the Savior ofthe World – in our own.Ukrainian Catholic Church.On December 2,2011, Patriarch Sviatoslavissued a pastoral letter forour church the world overcalled, “The Vibrant Parish– a place to encounterthe living Christ.” Thepurpose of the letter wasto initiate this campaignto rediscover the missionof our Ukrainian CatholicChurch and the work ithas to accomplish in the(continued on next page)

Hillside, NJ Parish Celebrates Easterwith Hahilky & Easter Egg HuntHillside, NJ –On Sunday, April 15, 2012, after the 10:45am Divine Liturgy, the parishioners ofImmaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church gathered in the church hall to watch the childrenperform hahilky (ritual Spring songs & dances) – under the direction of Odarka Polanskyj Stockert.Fr. Vasyl Vladyka, parochial vicar, also performed several unique hahilky that he learned when he was achild in Ukraine. The parishioners were in awe of Fr. Vasyl’s special performance. Fr. Vasyl truly broughtthe “Easter spirit” to this parish event.Afterwards, Teresa Szpyhulsky and Marta Olesnyckyj organized an Easter Egg Hunt for the children on theparish grounds. Hillside, NJ Parish Celebrates Easterwith Hahilky & Easter Egg Hunt(continued from previous page)Thechildrenperform HahilkaViu Vinecz (i.e.Making a wreath).At the end, thisparticular hahilkainvolves a uniquespiral formation.The Hahilka Zhoochok (i.e. the Beetle Dance) is asong and dance that describes a beetle thatcomes alive in the Spring and celebrates his festiveattire by walking on a fir tree branch. During thedance, the children form two rows and create abridge. The smallest of the children walk overthe branch and then return via the tunnel that theother dancers have created.Odarka Polanskyj Stockert lead thechildren in Hahilky.The Hahilka Zajchik is a song and dance abouta zajchik (rabbit) running in a meadow gatheringbeautiful flowers. In remembrance of Bishop John Stockon the 40th anniversary of his deathSavior of thousands of Ukrainian Displaced Personsthroughout Western Europe after World War IIOn Apr. 22, the last seminar of the Spring Semester of the“Saint Sophia” Religious Association of Ukrainian Catholicsin the USA and the Shevchenko Scientific Society (PhiladelphiaBranch) was dedicated in memoriam to the 40th anniversaryof the unexpected passing into the Kingdom of the Lord ofBishop John Stock. Since Bishop Stock was the pastor ofAnnunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian CatholicChurch in Melrose Park, Pennsylvania (1971-72), the seminartook place in the church hall immediately following theDivine Liturgy celebrated by His Grace Most Rev. StefanSoroka, Metropolitan-Archbishop of Philadelphia forUkrainian Catholics in the United States. The co-celebrantswere: Most Rev. Basil H.
