Presentation title hereHow can you apply safe practice to YOUR work?Prior to carrying out a manual handling activity, manual handling legislation advises peopletoAvoid –It is advised that manual handling tasks are avoided where reasonable practical. However, when tasks cannot be avoided, risks need to be identified and reduced down to the lowest levelpracticable.Assess –If avoidance is not possible, hazards and risks must be identified. This is done by using aTILE assessment where the Task, Individual, Load and Environment and Equipment are assessed.Reduce –When risks have been assessed, control measures must then be implemented, forexample, the use of equipment, further assistance from another member ofstaff, additional training. These control measures aim to reduce the risk of injury to yourself and others.Review –Risk assessments must be reviewed annually at minimum to ensure processes in placeremain effectiveSafe systems of work/guidelines for activities such as: low level, mid level and high level lifting of an inanimate load, the carrying/holding of a load are included in this presentation and can also be found via the trust intranet, manualhandling pagesManual Handling Advisory Service October 2018

Presentation title hereHow can you apply safe practice to YOUR work? The use of TILEE as your manual handling assessment, will highlight any potentialrisks involving the Task, Individual, Load and Environment and Equipment.Task –What does the task involve? Is it necessary, or can it be avoided? Consider what may impactyou, weight of the load? Distance to take the load? Regularity of doing the task. Do you need extrasupport?Individual –Load –What are your own individual capabilities? Consider your own health limitations. Can you manage the task safely independently? Have you been trained to complete the task? What is the size of the load, is it heavy, unstable, or likely to shift? Is it difficult to grasp? Canthe load be split or broken down. Can the load be stored in a different environment?Environment and Equipment –Are your surroundings safe or will obstaclesand clutter around you limit your ability to do the task? Consider is there sufficient lighting, is the flooringsafe – or is it wet, uneven? Do you need equipment to complete the task, and if so, have you been trainedand deemed competent.Once TILEE has been assessed, implement the action plan moving forwards i.e. Break down the load, use ofequipment, further assistanceManual Handling Advisory Service October 2018

Presentation title hereHow can you apply safe practice to YOUR work?Look after your back, think about your posture!Once a TILEE assessment has been completed, apply the 3 manual handling principlesto manual handling activities such as lifting and lowering inanimate loads1) Spine aligned – AVOID twisting, bending and/or slouching. A safe posture can be achieved bymaintaining an upright position2) Load close to waist –Our centre of gravity (COG) is around our waist, this is the strongestparts of our bodies, so aim to carry out manual handling tasks at this height, with the heaviest part of theload closest to you. When we carry out manual handling activities above, below or away from this height,it will increase the weight of the load by 10x, increasing the pressure and strain on our backs.3) Stable base – Ensure your feet are positioned at least hip width apart, sink down into thatposition (soft knees, to allow weight transference) as far as is comfortable for you. In doing this, this willensure you use your legs to carry out manual handling activities rather then your back.Manual handling advisory Service October 2018
