Spain – Birding & LynxThis is a combined birding and mammal trip, with a special focus on seeing endangeredIberian Lynx in the wild. We think this itinerary is one of the best available for this beautifulyet elusive cat, as it includes two classic Spanish destinations, giving you more opportunitiesto see the animals than alternative itineraries based solely in Andujar. In our second centre, where Lynx are the main target, we now have access to a private estate where the animalsare at their highest density in Spain. This is crucially important to maximise your chances asthe animals continue to decline. You also have the advantage of excellent birding in both places, including many Spanishresident speciality birds, and absorbing birding in pleasant weather is a very enjoyable partof this holiday. Birding in the excellent marismas of Coto Donana, and in Sierra de Andujar, part of the larger Sierra Morena Natural Park, is exceptional.Join us in two great destinations, for a full week of great wildlife watching during the(usually!) mild winter of southern Spain.

Spain – Birding & LynxIberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) stands on the brink of extinction, and is perhaps the mostendangered wild cat in the world, with only around 200 individuals remaining. Just a centuryago, it ranged over half of the Iberian peninsula. As recently as the mid-nineties it wasthought to occur in a wide area of south-west Spain. Today its range has shrunkdramatically to just two viable populations within Andalucía, and on this holiday we visitboth, with an estimated 15 – 20 individuals in Donana, the rest being in Sierra Morena.Finding this elusive cat is becoming ever more difficult, though Heatherlea have an excellentrecord. January is the ideal time to see Lynx, active during the cool daytime as animals seeka mate, before warmer months when they become more nocturnal. In 2015 we added aprivate estate to our existing special locations to maximise our chances.

Spain – Birding & LynxThe first part of the holiday concentrates largely on birding, with slight chances of Lynx. From our base in Coto Donana, we will explore the mosaic of marshes, pine woodland, openheathland and sand dunes at one of the best times to visit. This famous area can be verydry later in the year, but in winter its marshes usually hold water and attract great numbersof gulls, waders and other shorebirds, including flamingos, herons, egrets, White Stork,Black Stork, Glossy Ibis and Spoonbill. Thousands of wintering geese feed in the shallowwaters, and we also have the opportunity to catch up with some of southern Spain'sspecialities, in particular Purple Gallinule, Marbled Teal, Red-knobbed Coot and rare SpanishImperial Eagle. Some breeding raptors are back on territory, whilst others are passing onmigration, and the whole area is just full of life. We have chances of seeing Iberian Lynx, and other large mammals include Wild Boar, Red Deer, and Fallow Deer. The second part of our holiday is spent in Sierra de Andújar. This beautiful mountain chainholds dense populations of Red and Fallow Deer, Moufflon, Otter, and Wild Boar, as well asthe largest remaining Lynx population in Spain. Birds seen here should include Griffon andBlack Vultures, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Azure-winged Magpie, and Black Wheatear. We have taken great care in this itinerary to give you the best possible chances of seeingLynx. Our days are exciting, with excellent birding and mammal watching in a pleasantclimate. Our rural hotels give you the chance to experience real Spain, and we hope you willenjoy our special meals and Andalusian local wines. This is a relaxed holiday, with very littlewalking.

Spain – Birding & LynxOutline ItineraryEnjoy your complimentary pre-flight overnight hotel before your holiday begins. Full detailsfrom our office!Days 1 – 4: Friday – MondayDOÑANA NATIONAL PARKAfter relaxing in our complimentary airport lounge, we fly Gatwick to Malaga, and GuideCristian Jensen will meet you on arrival. We drive to Coto de Donana, perhaps with a detourto see White-headed Duck, then passing through the fertile farmland and fruit groves westof the Guadalquivir River. Our birding begins at adjacent “marismas”, bird-filled lagoons and wetlands at theirwintering peak, laden with Flamingos, Egrets, coots, waders and numerous other waterfowl.Birdlife also includes Black-winged Kite and Spanish Imperial Eagle. We also spend timelooking for Iberian Lynx, exploring the woodland, marshes, sand dunes and open grasslandwhere we are likely to encounter Iberian Hares, Red Deer and Fallow Deer. The Marshes by El Rocío and the varied habitats of El Rocina teem with birds – Spoonbills, herons and egrets fly over the reed beds as Marsh Harrier quarter the vegetation. In shallowwater, Greater Flamingo and White Stork feed, surrounded by wintering waders. The uniquevillage of El Rocío lies at the edge of the Parque National de Doñana, and this “Wild West”town, with its white buildings and church, makes an amazing backdrop. Here we are likely toencounter horsemen cantering through the wide, sandy streets, or a mule and cart tied upto the hitching rails outside the houses. Thousands of Greylag Geese and Common Cranesgraze fresh grass, while a few wintering Whiskered Tern may hawk over open water, swooping down to the surface to pick off a small insect or tiny fish. In the more woodedareas, Serin and Azure-Winged Magpies seem never to stop looking for food. PurpleGallinule can often be seen and Little Grebes occasionally take a brief swim across toanother patch of reeds. A large number of wintering duck include Shoveler, Pintail and ofcourse Marbled Teal.

Spain – Birding & LynxOutline ItineraryDays 4 – 7: Tuesday – Thursday SIERRA MORENA NATURE PARKA tremendous contrast, as we head east for a four night stay in the Sierra Morena. To givethe best chances of a Lynx sighting, we must spend time scanning from a number of scenicviewpoints. From each we overlook vast tracts of Lynx habitat, and chairs will be provided,as we may have to be patient to see the animals! Here sightings of Lynx are often at longrange, or can be quite close at hand. Patience is required to find these beautiful animals. In2018, we will use the tracks in Los Lobos, a private estate where Lynx are perhaps at theirgreatest density in Spain. We have to pay extra for this access, but we consider itworthwhile, as we can search for the animals in quiet places away from the crowds lookingfor Lynx at public viewpoints, though we will do plenty of this too! The scenery in thedehesa, formed by huge rock boulders and extensive scrubland is magnificent, and birdlife isrich, with excellent chances of Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, GoldenEagle, Sardinian Warbler, the Spanish race of Green Woodpecker, Hawfinch, Firecrest andEagle Owl. Our accommodation here is a guest house situated in the heart of beautifuldehesa woodland. All rooms have en suite facilities.Day 8: FridayEarly morning birding before we drive to Malaga Airport to fly home. Arrive London Gatwicklate afternoonMore Holiday Information:Accommodation is in comfortable rural hotels with all rooms en suite.Food Breakfast is typical of Spain, consisting of a roll with jam and cheese. Fruit juice and tea orcoffee is also available. Picnic lunches will include a variety of local produce plus soft drinks.Evening meals are generally local dishes, which are very good but sometimes simple. Food isusually plentiful. Vegetarian and other diets are welcome.Walking The holiday is not strenuous. Walking is generally easy, on paths and tracks. Mostbirding is done close to our vehicle, and even on the longest walks we are never far from theminibuses, should anyone wish to go back.Weather Typically, temperatures will range from -4 to 8ºC in the early morning to perhaps 1020ºC in the “heat” of the day. Sunshine should be plentiful, but wind, clouds, rain or even snoware possible. Cold weather, with temperatures as low as -10ºC, are rare but possible.Clothing Warmer layers are recommended as the weather can be very changeable and quitecold at times, particularly in the early mornings/evenings. Cold, windy or wet weather is possible,so bring a warm jacket, jumpers/fleece, and adequate rainwear. It can also be quite sunny attimes so some light long-sleeved layers should be packed – pack for all weather! Light footwearwill be adequate most of the time, though occasional longer walks require comfortable walkingboots or shoes.Photography Spain is a good place for scenic photography, but birds can be difficult toapproach for good shots, though there will be some opportunities. If you are a seriousphotographer, please note that this is predominately a birding/nature holiday, and opportunitieswill be limited by birdwatching and the waiting times whilst on Lynx watches. Camera equipmentshould be packed in moisture and dust-proof bags as a precaution.Insects biting insects are not expected.Group size is restricted to 12 clients maximum.Flights are by scheduled airline, from London Gatwick. We may be able to offer flightarrangements from another airport and/or or quote without flights so you can make your ownarrangements. If you wish to add an extension either before or after your holiday, please contactus and we will be happy to arrange this for you.

HEATHERLEA TRIP REPORTDOÑANA & IBERIAN LYNX TOURTHURSDAY 5 – THURSDAY 12 JANUARY 2017Heatherlea (Scotland) LtdThe Mountview Hotel, Nethybridge,Inverness-shire PH25 3EBTel: 01479 821248 Fax: 01479 821515Email: a Guide: Cristian JensenThursday 5 JanuaryToday all members of the group arrived at Malaga airport to lovely sunny weather. It may have beena contrast after flying from London in the morning. We packed all the suitcases in the van and moved out of Malaga towards the northwest, heading toour destination Doñana. Today it would be mainly focused on the transfer and a little birding in Fuentede Piedra to break the ride up. Along the journey we could enjoy some birds already from the van, such as the White Storks on the nest on top of the electric pylons, many Common Buzzards, Red Kites,a Marsh Harrier, Ravens, and quite a few Spotless Starlings. We broke the transfer by birding in the great endorheic lagoon, where we saw many ducks and amongthem White-headed Ducks. Also Flamingos and Stone curlews where recorded. Then we made analways welcome comfort stop with some coffees before hitting the road again.Once in Doñana we checked in and had a well-deserved dinner in our comfortable hotel.

Friday 6 JanuaryToday was dedicated to explore and enjoy the eastern part of Doñana (lagoons, rice fields andmarshland) and the beauty of its landscapes and birds. We started birding a little from the vans, spotting Cattle Egrets and a very elegant Black ShoulderedKite hunting mice. By the river, we were able to enjoy a Kingfisher and a Cetti’s Warbler singing. As wewere slowly driving, flocks of little finches based on Serins and big numbers of Goldfinches and Linnetswere something very nice to see, complemented with Meadow Pipits, White Wagtails and Skylarks. The group soon started to realise how common the Corn Buntings are here. In such an extensive areaof land this species does very well and has suffered very much from the intensification of theagriculture in many other places in Europe. On our way to the wetlands we first stopped to watch a mixed group of waders, finding Lapwings,Common Ringed Plovers and Golden Plovers. Soon a couple of Black Storks were spotted by the group, and Black-shouldered Kites. By the edge of the road we stopped the vans to enjoy a nice maleBluethroat, which showed up very well, and a flock of Spanish Sparrows too. We realised that femalescan be a bit tricky to tell, but males show their characteristic black stripes on the belly side. PurpleSwamphen was spotted very close giving astonishing views. We entered in a rice paddy area, where the levels of the water were better for the small waders. Herewe extended the collection of species with Dunlin, Little Stint, Little Ringed Plover, Common RingedPlover, Kentish Plover and Wood Sandpiper. Before midday we arrived at a big lagoon surrounded byreed beds and open landscape. In the surrounding rice fields, there was a group of Glossy Ibis, and acouple of Great White Egrets. This fresh water lagoon gave us a nice hour birdwatching that produceda Black-necked Grebe, Little Grebes and a good collection of wildfowl, like Red-crested Pochards,Gadwalls, Common Teals, Shoveler, Coots, Ferruginous Ducks, a hybrid Tufted Duck x Pochard andanother White-headed Duck.We then moved to one of the Doñana visitor’s centre to enjoy a picnic stop and a coffee. and other large mammals include Wild Boar, Red Deer, and Fallow Deer. The second part of our holiday is spent in Sierra de Andújar. This beautiful mountain chain holds dense populations of Red and Fallow Deer, Moufflon, Otter, and Wild Boar, as well as the largest remaining Lynx population in Spain. Birds seen here should include Griffon and
