BACHELOR OF SCIENCE-CARDIOVASCULAR SONOGRAPHYDIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHYDiagnostic medica l sonography includes four primaryareas of specialization: general, cardiac, musculoskeletal, and vascular. General sonography includes subspecialties forobstetrics and gynecology exams; abdominal, neurological, and breast exams; and exams of structures such as joints andtendons. Cardiac sonography examines the anatomicalstructure and funct ion of the heart. Vascular sonographystud ies the anatomical and physiological characteristicsof all arteries and ve ins in the body. A ll diagnosticmedical sonography uses ultrasound to obtain imagesand is, therefore, considered noninvasive, having noknown risks or side effects in comparison to other widelyused medical imagi ng methods.CARDIAC SONOGRAPHY (ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY)Card iac sonographers are more commonly ca lled echocardiographers or echo-techs. Echocard iography obtainsimages of the heart via ultrasound. It is one of the mostwidely used imaging examinations for assistance in thediagnosis of heart disease. Echocardiography is especiallyusefu l for assessing diseases that affect the heart valvesand for detecting abnormal ities in the motion andappearance of the heart wall .VASCULARSONOGRAPHYVascular sonographers use ultrasound imaging and othertypes of exams to detect anatomical and physiologicalchanges caused by diseases of the arteries and ve ins andthe resulting effects on organs and other t issues. Vasculardisorders include carotid artery disease, which may lead tostroke; abdominal vascu lar diseases, such as ane urysmSjperipheral arte rial disease, which can result in chronicpain and may progress to loss of limbs; and venousconditions that can cause blood clots (thromboses),which can travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolism).CARDIOVASCULAR SONOGRAPHY PROGRAMThe NSU Cardiovascular Sonograph y Program inTampa offers didactic and clinica l training in two ofthese special ties, card iac sonography (adult) and vascu larsonography, as an integrated curricu lum . AdditionalIIcomprehensive program covering both specialties. Also, some cardiology departments and other imagingproviders may prefer that sonogra phers obtain trainingand professional registry in both card iac sonography andvascular sonography for purposes of diagnostic expediencyand profeSSional flexibility.BACHELOR OF SCIENCE-CARDIOVASCULARSONOGRAPHY (B.S.-CVS)This specialty program is designed to prepare studentsfor entry- level positions in the field of card iovasculartechnology. Students take online courses at the undergrad uate level, as well as attend on-campus lecturesintegrated wi th hands-on training in the ultrasound lab. This prepares them for the 12-month clinical externshipduring their second year. Upon graduation, the B.S.CVS student will be eligible to apply for ad mission to theonline Master of Health Sc ience (M.H .Sc.) program.CONCURRENT MASTER OF HEALTHSCIENCE OPTIONStudents who already hold a bachelor's degree from anaccred ited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 areeligible ro apply for the concurrent Master of HealthScience (M.H.Sc.) option. Students who enroll inthis concurrent M.H.Sc. program will graduate with aBachelor of Science-Cardiovascular Sonography anda Master of Health Science. Both programs will becompleted in 27 months.Upon application, a review of rhe bachelor's degreetranscript will be conducted and all genera l educationrequ irements will need to be satisfied. In addition, up to27 credits of open electives will be transferred. Upontransfer credit evaluation, completion of any additionalcredit to meet or fulfill the 57 credits for general educationand open elective requirements will be required.Courses in the M.H.Sc. program online include Writingfor Medical Publication, Research Methods, Epidemiologyand Biostatistics, and Management in H ealth Care. The coursewill, therefore, be primarily taught in the ultrasoundtraining laboratory in small groups, with sup plementalonline content and challenge-based learning ass ignments. The focus of the course will be to lead the students towardproficiency and competency in using all the tools availableon the ultrasound equipment for the production of qualityimages, as well as proper ergonomics, patient handling, and care of the equipment. This course is the foundationfor all the following core courses.CVS 3001 Correlative Imaging and Anatomy . 4For this course, emphas is will be placed on teaching thestudents to identify normal cross-sectional anatomy basedon the characteristics of each imaging modality, theposition of other relative anatomy {anatomical landmarks),proportionali ty of size, and correlation with other imagi ngmodalities. As such, this course will serve as the foundationfor knowledge and understanding of both fundamentalimaging analysis and anato mical identification, which willbe required for successful comp letion of the core coursesin the balance of the program curriculum.CVS 3010 Echocardiography I. . 3This course will provide an introduction to techniques, measurements, and normal function of the adult heart asevaluated with ultrasou nd. It will have a strong hands-oncomponent and students will spend several hours per weekin the ultrasound training laboratory acqui ring skills inbasic imaging, patient positioning, and ergonomics to forma solid foundation for later, more-advanced courses. Lectureswill include, but not be limited to, a review of the normalanatomy and physiological function of the heart, commonlyencountered pathology, pathophysiology, basic treatmentoptions, and beginning analysis of data obtained byultrasound, as well as introduction to other cardiofocused techniques.12I Nova Southeastern UniversityCredit Hou rsCVS 3020 Echocardiography II . . . . 3This is an intermediate course on the use of ultrasound for theevaluation of the adult heart and heart function. It will have astrong hands-on component and students will spend severalhours per week in the ultrasound training laboratory acquiringadvanced imaging skills to begin mastery of the adult echocardiography examination. Lectures will continue with advancedsubjects including, but not limited to, acquired and congenitalpathologies, pathophysiology, and treatment options. In-depthanalysis of echocardiographic findings and presentation of samein preliminary reporting will also be covered in detail.CVS 3030 Echocardiography III . . 4This is an advanced COurse on the use of specialized ultrasoundtechniques for the evaluation of the adult heart, with additionalcontent for pediatric echocardiography and other advancedimaging techniques and considerations. It will have a stronghands-on component and students will spend several hours perweek in the ultrasound training labo ratory acqui ring advancedimaging skills. Lectures will cover special considerations foradvanced imaging, specific pathologies and anatomicalconsiderations for pediatric imaging, pediatric congenitalpathologies, pathophysiology, treatment options, and analysisof data obtained by ultrasound, as well as other cardia-focusedtechniques. Additional topics will cover procedures andother considerations surrounding the performance of theechocardiogtaphy exam that will be encountered in a clinicalsetting, preparing the student for clinical externships in yeartwo of the program.CVS 3040 Ultrasound Physics I . . . 4This course helps the student acquire knowledge of all thefundamental principles and concepts necessary to understandthe properties of sound and ultrasound as used in diagnosticimaging. These principles and concepts will span from basicproperties of sound in soft tissue to advanced techniques, such as Doppler, spectral analysis, and M-mode, as theypertain to evaluation for vascular and cardiac ultrasoundimaging. Students will also learn about artifacts, safety, andthe concepts of bio-effects. Key physics principles will beillustrated with hands-on exercises and activities in theclassroom and lab, utilizing both the imaging equipment andmore everyday materials. C hallenge-based learning physicsassign ments will also be given to further the learning process.
