The Board of Trustees along with the staff of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library hope you and your family are safe and well and doing what you can to take care of yourself and your loved ones during this unsettling time. Since first learning of COVID-19, the Library has worked to address the situation proactively. Our actions – guided by recommendations from local, state and federal officials – have held paramount the health and safety of our patrons and staff members. We are doing our best to fight the spread of the virus by keeping the Library closed, maintaining social distancing and wearing masks. These things add to the challenge of everyday life. In the interest of the well-being of our entire community we will remain closed to outside visitors until the government deems it safe for us to reopen. In an effort to minimize the impact on the execution of the Library mission, we have modified our operations and now offer a wide array of online education, entertainment and exercise programs for the whole family to enjoy in the safety of their home.

Many of our virtual programs are delivered to your home computers using the Zoom platform. You can use Zoom for free! Just download the app to your iPhone, iPad or Android device and enjoy our online events. (For more information, visit our website, go to “The Reference Desk” button and click on “Other Resources.” Scroll down to Zoom instructions.) For programs that are limited and require registration, you will be asked to email Lois Buonagurio, our Adult Program Coordinator at loisb@poblib.org. Once you receive your registration confirmation email, you will be given the meeting ID and password to log-on to your program. ADULT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY with John Fetter Thursday, June 4 at 2:00 pm Zoom Lecture From its Civil War origins to its modern-day traditions, find out more about America’s most solemn holiday when American History lecturer, John Fetter explores the history of this American custom. INSPIRING GARDEN IDEAS USING ORNAMENTAL GRASS with Paul Levine Wednesday, June 10 at 4:00 pm Zoom Lecture “Plant Man” Paul Levine will give a Zoom ornamental grass talk that you can enjoy at home. He will discuss six different ornamental grasses. Paul will talk about the best soil and fertilizer, watering techniques, as well as the perfect location for each grass and how they can be used in your landscape. As a bonus, you will hear about two summer flowers. FRANK SINATRA: LECTURE-IN-SONG with Jack Schnur Tuesday, June 16 at 2:00 pm Zoom Lecture Jack Schnur will give a multi-media Zoom presentation on the greatest American entertainer, Frank Sinatra. It will include clips of his many films, personal interviews and performances of his hit songs alone and with entertainers such as Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland and the legendary Rat Pack. ADULT CREATIVITY PROGRAMS BEGINNER CROCHET LESSONS with Lois Buonagurio Fridays at 2:00 pm June 5, 12, 19, 26 - via Zoom BEGINNER GUITAR LESSONS with Benjamin “Benoir” Metzger Tuesdays at 11:30 am June 9, 16, 23, 30 - via Zoom Make a home-made scarf for the fall! You will learn how to master basic crochet skills in this four-week workshop. Materials needed: 2 balls of light-colored yarn and 1 size G or H crochet hook. Registration is required by emailing Lois Buonagurio at loisb@poblib.org. You will be registered for all four classes. Limit of 12 in class. Learn about the guitar, practice warm-up exercises, freestyle fingering, flat pick style and basic chords. Please have a guitar pick and tune your guitar prior to each session. If you don’t have one, a guitar pick can be made from an old plastic credit card by cutting a 2” triangular shape. Registration is required by emailing Lois Buonagurio at loisb@poblib.org. POB LIBRARY STRONG SUMMER READING PROGRAM Friday, June 5 - Monday, August 31 It wouldn’t be summer without Family Center offering a Summer Reading Program for all our young patrons from babies through high school. This year the program will be different than in the past, but we still hope our online program is engaging and encourages reading. This year we will be using the BEANSTACK program for Summer Reading. Click on the Summer Reading button on our homepage to find instructions on how to use BEANSTACK and enroll your child in a program suited for their age group. Babies and Toddlers - List the title Complete the Summer Reading Bingo Card you see below at home. 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN CHALLENGE (continues enrollment) The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your How to read 1,000 BOOKS newborn, infant, toddler, and/or preschooler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books BEFORE KINDERGARTEN (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it 1 BOOK PER DAY FOR 3 YEARS 1095 BOOKS sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will 10 BOOKS PER WEEK FOR 2 YEARS 1040 BOOKS have read 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in 3 BOOKS PER DAY FOR 1 YEAR 1095 BOOKS three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think. (So get started). The key is perseverance. To help, the Family Center will offer incentives. This program is now going online through BEANSTACK. Register online through the library’s homepage. Prizes will be available as you complete different levels, but will be able to be picked up, when the library is open to the public. For patrons who previously started this program, please register using BEANSTACK and continue adding titles. When we fully open, we will combine your records. June 15 GOODNIGHT GORILLA CRAFT Ages 3 to 5 years Adults and children will enjoy listening to the picture book story: Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann, before learning how to make homemade clay and then using the clay, small toy animals, twigs and/or craft sticks to retell this imaginative little story. June 12 DALMATIAN AND STARRY NIGHT ART LESSONS – GEARED FOR ENTERING GRADES 1 THROUGH 4 Learn to draw a Dalmatian looking up at Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” Step-by-step instruction with Art Teacher Amy. You will need either Crayola markers, or colored pencils, or watercolors and some heavyweight paper (98lb. or more) or watercolor paper. We will draw step-by-step like we usually do in class at the library and participants will be shown how to color the beautiful blues and yellows in the sky. Participants will need to have an 8.5” x 11” sheet of white paper, a pencil, black marker, and a few neon highlighters or regular markers for this program. Starting Mon. June 1 YOGA FOR TWEENS AND TEENS – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Tweens and teens will learn yoga postures and breathing exercises while having the opportunity to relax and destress. TEEN COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES In each edition of the Library Newsletter we will list opportunities for teens to volunteer at the Library and earn Community Service Credit. ARTWORK VIRTUAL GALLERY – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Students entering grade 5-12 will have the opportunity to submit their artwork for display in our virtual gallery. Each submission should include the name of the piece, the artist’s name, and a brief blurb about the submission. Acceptable files include gif, jpeg, tiff, or png. Please check the library website for further information and submission guidelines. Each student will earn one hour of community service credit for each submitted, and accepted, work of art up to a maximum of five hours. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase work that has been completed in school during the year or an opportunity to create something new. CALLING ALL TEENS! Summer is here and the library has an assortment of wonderful programs planned for this year. The first is the annual Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “POB LIBRARY STRONG.” Summer Reading participants entering grades 5-12 will have the opportunity to earn one hour of community service credit for each book report/review submitted and approved during the Summer Reading Program. A maximum number of five hours of community service credit can be earned this way. COLLEGE CONNECTION COLLEGE PREP ZOOM PROGRAM This Zoom workshop will provide high school students and parents with information regarding the college search and application process.
