Pre-Apprenticeship: Building a Talent Pipeline, Presented by: Michelle Miller Central Piedmont Community College Michelle Miller is the Executive Director of Corporate and Workplace Learning at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and leads the teams responsible for Customized Training, Contract Training and Work-Based Learning/Apprenticeships. CPCC’s Corporate Learning Center works with business and industry to provide "Solutions Through Education" via training programs that can be customized and delivered based on an organization's business model. The Center also assists organizations with state funding streams for training as well as connecting to other areas of the college such as interns/apprenticeships, ESL, and free job postings on its Career website.Michelle is a graduate of West Virginia University-Parkersburg with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing and management.

Partnership Tools Pre-Apprenticeship Pre-apprenticeship is a viable way to grow the apprenticeship pipeline by preparing individuals to enter and succeed in Registered Apprenticeship programs May be paid or unpaid Can consist of on-the-job learning only; Can consist of related education only; or Can be a combination of both May be time-based or competency based The pre-apprentice must be at least 16 years of age Must be approved and registered by ApprenticeshipNC with the intent to lead to a Registered Apprenticeship program Does not commit the company to the pre-apprentice if the fit is not there

Partnership Tools Pre-Apprenticeships Employer Benefits: HS Tuition Waiver The waiver requires the participants to be high school students when entering the program. A high school student must be entered into a pre-apprenticeship or a registered apprenticeship prior to graduation from high school in order to qualify for the waiver. If a high school student is entered into a pre-apprenticeship prior to graduation, he/she will have 120 days to be entered into a registered apprenticeship to qualify for the waiver. A high school student can be registered while in high school directly into a registered apprenticeship and qualify for the waiver.

Partnership Tools Pre-Apprenticeship Curriculum Apprenticeship2000 and Apprenticeship Charlotte Partner Companies Selected pre-apprentices take 2 summer classes at CPCC: Application Software for Technicians (48 hr) Industrial Safety (32 hr) Classroom Instruction While spending time at the sponsor company site for on-the-job learning 6 weeks x 40 hours/week 240 hours (June 11-July 20) Upon completion, apprentice selections are made Industry-based Training

Partnership Tools: Staffing Support Pre-Apprenticeship & Apprenticeship Sr. Coordinator-Apprenticeship CLT Coordinator-Workplace Learning Focus on growing and building employer relationships and collaborating with the respective college program areas to develop and implement Apprenticeship CLT programs. Focus on ensuring student success in collaboration with student, employer and college faculty/staff. Assist student with applying, placement testing, schedule building, registration and book purchase Research, outreach and networking Collaborate with curriculum/CCE program areas to identity course of study Provide employer with 8-week grade reporting Assist employers with implementation process Partner with college program areas if student services are needed (tutoring) Support employer partners with recruitment efforts Serve as a primary point of contact at CPCC for student Support employer partners with recruitment efforts Tracking leads
