Volume 04 August 2018 The fruit of Silence is Prayer. The fruit of Prayer is Faith. The fruit of Faith is Love. The fruit of Love is Service. The fruit of Service is Peace. These five lines were written on St. Teresa of Calcutta's business cards. The card didn't have her name or the Missionaries of Charity written on it, just these simple words. On the back of the card it said, "Mary, mother of Jesus, be a mother to me now." How simple but how remarkable these words are. When I think of the "fruits" of Parish Social Ministry, these five lines say it all. With the Parish Social Ministry Gathering right around the corner, I have been reading a lot about the life of St. Teresa of Calcutta. If there was a patron saint for Parish Social Ministry, Mother Teresa would be that saint. Her life work exemplifies what it means to love and care for the poor, the lonely, the elderly, the children, the forgotten. I am about half way through a book titled "Mother Teresa of Calcutta: A Personal Portrait" by Msgr. Leo Massburg. Msgr. Leo traveled many years with St. Teresa, so he has many wonderful first hand stories of her life. Some of the stories he tells are so funny as he recounts St. Teresa's subtle ways of winning over politicians, and government officials, but other stories were so moving that I find myself putting down the book so I can prayerfully reflect on what I just read. What strikes me the most as I continue to read about her life, was her intense love for every person she met. Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official overseas humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, had a special relationship with St. Teresa. Many times CRS would work alongside Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity as they loved and helped those who were poor or marginalized. Several years ago, CRS released a series of video reflections of their own stories of Mother Teresa. It is worth taking a look. With that in mind, CRS is also the featured Catholic Charities - Social Concerns ministry this month. Please scroll down to learn more about the humanitarian work of our U.S. Catholic Church around the world. I have also added a "Spiritual Formation" and "Prayer for the Journey" section to the newsletter. I came across a beautiful prayer by Blessed Cardinal Newman that I wanted to share with each of you. Lastly, it is not too late to register for the Parish Social Ministry Gathering that will take place on August 25 at Holy Name Parish in Beech Grove, IN. Register at www.archindy.org/parishsocialministrygathering. Sincerely in Christ, Theresa Chamblee

Prayer for the Journey Prayer by Blessed Cardinal Newman Dear Jesus Help us to spread Your fragrance everywhere we go. Flood our soul with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess our whole being, so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through us, and be so in us that every soul we come in contact with may feel Your presence in our souls. Let them look up and see no longer us but only Jesus! Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as You shine, so to shine as to be a light to others; the light, O Jesus will be

all from You; none of it will be ours; it will be you shining on others through us. Let us thus praise You in th way You love best by shining on those around us. Let us proclaim You without preaching, not by words but by our example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what we do, the evident fullness of the love our hearts bear to you. Amen. Ministries of Catholic Charities Social Concerns What is Social Concerns? Social Concerns encourages the Community to grow in a deeper understanding of Catholic Social Teaching by providing resources and strategies for effective action in parishes, schools and surrounding communities. Most importantly, it calls us to a deeper understanding in living out the Two Greatest Commandments, which is to Love God and to Love our Neighbors, both locally and globally."
