NANYANG SCHOLARSHIPLIMITLESS POSSIBILITIESFOR YOURB UNDLESSPOTENTIALNTU. A GLOBAL UNIVERSITY ON A RAPID RISE

NTU:THE FASTEST-RISINGUNIVERSITY IN THE WORLDRanked among the world’s Top 50 Universities and second on the list of the world’sYoung Elite Universities, NTU is the fastest-rising university to have leapt over 33 placesin the last three years. Our research-intensive focus, multidisciplinary curricula, and real-world educationalapproach help prepare our students to be effective problem-solvers and passionatecontributors, uncovering their boundless potential for the nation and the world. With ourhigh-quality global education and stellar faculty, it is not surprising that we are theuniversity of choice for top students. This year, NTU attracted 60% more top studentsover 2011. ENGINEERINGA BRIGHTER FUTUREMy goal is to build a solid foundation for my future career by havinga good university education. I aim to prepare myself with the essentialskills to take on any challenges and excel in whatever I do in the future. With the Nanyang Scholarship, I have been given the opportunitiesto pursue these goals in my learning path.me a full understanding of engineering and affirms my intention tospecialise in the area of chemical engineering. In addition, I am ableto go on a one-year overseas study stint at the University of California,Berkeley. I am very excited about it as there will be an IndustrialOrientation Programme in Silicon Valley!I picked the Nanyang Scholarship because it gives me the freedomto choose and the flexibility to explore. Being bond-free with noattachment to any organisation, I can choose where I want to internat. Most importantly, I have the flexibility to explore various employmentopportunities before settling down to the right one when I graduate. This programme also emphasises multidimensional learning andcovers non-engineering subjects like Business and the Liberal Arts aswell. To ensure students get the most out of this holistic curriculum, class size is kept small, with only about 50 outstanding studentsadmitted. This enables our professors to give us more individualisedattention and mentorship. The Scholarship also comes with financial support for my undergraduatestudies and my summer exchange programme – which I completedat the University of Stuttgart in Germany last year. The Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP) is the key reasonI chose NTU. In just 4.5 years, I am able to graduate with not just aBachelor of Engineering Science, but also a Master of Science inTechnology Management. REP introduces us to the basics of differentengineering fields before we decide on our specialisation. This givesAbout a year ago, I was faced with a number of tough questions likewhere to study, what to study, which scholarship to take. I wanted tomake the best decision because I knew it would have a lot of bearingon my future. After going through my first year of study here, I canconfidently say I made the right choice!I love NTU!

ASPIRING TOHAVE IT ALLAs a firm believer in the importance of both academic and non-academicachievements, I aim to never stop learning and improving. With theNanyang Scholarship, I am able to nurture myself into an all-rounderwith a wealth of experience in diverse areas.Motivated to constantly better myself, I make it a point to be involvedin different types of activities so that I can acquire a wide range ofskills and grow holistically. The annual accommodation allowance fromthe Nanyang Scholarship allows me to stay in the campus withoutadding to my expenses, and at the same time, gives me more time toparticipate in various extra-curricular activities, like Soul Funky dancing, swimming, and the Overseas Community Involvement Programme. The invaluable exposure has made me both a better team player, aswell as a better leader. I strongly encourage other students to stay inthe hall and be actively involved with campus activities to enhancetheir learning experience in their university years.Because of my keen interest in media studies, the good reputation ofthe Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information was amajor deciding factor for me in choosing NTU. The School is the firstamong all the local higher education institutions to offer a wellestablished and recognised communications degree. There is a goodbalance of practical and theory learning that will bode well for me inmy future career path. Frequent interactions with lecturers and studentsfrom different countries have also widened my circle of friends andsharpened my communication skills as well.NTU certainly provides me with the right environment to gain newexperiences and constantly improve myself, and most importantly, adds colourful touches to my university life.

SEEING THE WORLDIN NEW PERSPECTIVESI believe that learning is a lifelong process, and I hope to gain newperspectives and a global outlook from my tertiary education in NTU.The Nanyang Scholarship has given me the opportunity to have abroad-based learning journey that extends beyond the walls of theclassrooms. I have broadened my learning horizons through myparticipation in events like the Eminent Speaker Series, where I metmany prominent figures who are the best in their respective fields. One of them was our former Foreign Minister, Mr. George Yeo, whogave me fresh perspectives on national and global issues. Thesesessions were not only interesting, but also very enriching. As I comefrom a humble background, the Scholarship has also lightened thefinancial load on my parents, eliminating the need to get loans to fundmy tertiary education. My dream is to be an actuary when I graduate. The Actuarial Sciencespecialisation under NTU’s business programme is the first in Singaporeto be accredited by the UK’s Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Withthis accreditation, I am able to gain eight exemptions out of 15 forprofessional actuarial examinations, allowing me to be a step aheadin fulfilling my dream. In addition, NTU provides me with various opportunities to pursue myinterests in Actuarial Science. As a member of the Quantitative Financeand Actuarial Science Club, I get to meet people who share the samepassion as I do. I also get to organise events like the Actuarial ScienceCase Challenge and various Service Learning Projects. At the ActuarialNetworking Night, I met experienced actuaries who shared with usthe challenges they faced in their work and gave us valuable careeradvice. These interactions are very useful in helping me set my futurecareer direction. At NTU, there is strong emphasis on communication and team work. For most of our business modules, we are required to work in teamsand present our ideas and findings to the rest of the class. Throughsuch group projects, I get to hone my soft skills such as building goodworking relationships, as well as communication and leadership skills. These are important and provide me with an all-round development.NTU has made my undergraduate journey much smoother, and I lookforward to gaining more new experiences and having more exposureto diverse perspectives.

STUDENT TODAY,LEADER TOMORROWAfter I graduated with a Diploma in Veterinary Technology, NTU offeredme the opportunity to continue pursuing Biological Sciences, a subjectthat I have been interested in since my polytechnic days. To me, everyresearch study aims to improve our understanding of the biologicalworld, and will, directly or indirectly, contribute to the community. Thatis precisely what I want to do one day — give back to society throughmy research work.Under the Nanyang Scholarship, I get to further my knowledge andunderstanding in the field of Biological Sciences with full financialcoverage and no requirement to serve any bond. The Scholarshipalso comes with opportunities for me to explore the different areas ofthe field before making an informed decision on my future career. Morethan just financial coverage, the Nanyang Scholarship has helped mehone my leadership skills. At the Nanyang Scholars Orientation andLeadership Camp in my first year, I was able to network with otherscholars from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. There, I gotto discover more of my own leadership potential and how tomaximise it.NTU provides a very conducive environment for learning with wellequipped laboratories and access to a comprehensive reservoir oflibrary resources and online tools. Professors, lecturers, and tutorsalike are always more than willing to answer any queries. We areencouraged to be proactive and to ask questions to help us understanda topic well.Over the years, NTU has become my home away from home. Myexperience in the Hall of Residence 15 has been truly enriching. Halllife is vibrant with celebrations and events. Friends and seniors in thehall are just like my family, studying with me and providing guidanceand encouragement whenever the going gets tough. Living in the hallhas also taught me essential management and financial skills throughmy roles as Business Manager and Financial Controller for the JuniorCommon Room Committee. I believe that these valuable skills will, one day, come in handy and give me an edge in my career.NTU is definitely a step in the right direction for me, especially in mypursuit to be a researcher in Biological Sciences. With a dynamic, interactive, and ever-enriching learning environment, I know my futureis in good hands.

ALWAYS EXPLORING,ALWAYS ENJOYINGI enjoy challenges within and outside of academics, and I am alwaysthirsty for new experiences. After spending four years in the Aerospace Engineering programmeas an undergraduate, I began to realise that I am more intrigued notby how airplanes fly, but rather, the engineering mechanics andprinciples of solids or structures. That is why I have decided to pursuea joint PhD programme with NTU and the University of Southamptonthat focuses on a research project related to offshore marine structures.Going into research is a natural progression for me as I was underthe CN Yang Scholars Programme – an additional programme on topof my engineering course – during my undergraduate days. Theprogramme provides a strong and broad foundation in the basics ofscience and mathematics, empowering students to delve deeper intovarious related disciplines, including technology and engineering. Moreimportantly, it cultivated my interest in research. With this early exposureto research, coupled with the mentorship of very experiencedprofessors, I have established good research habits that enable meto pursue practically any field that I want to venture into.Apart from the CN Yang Scholars Programme, I was also offered theNanyang Scholarship, which gave me financial support throughoutmy undergraduate studies in NTU. When I was in my third year, I wentto the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands for a six-monthoverseas exchange programme. The travel grant and living allowancefrom the Scholarship had covered my expenses well, and I was ableto explore, learn, and enjoy my trip to the fullest. The experience wasindeed very rewarding and it has spurred me to go for this PhDprogramme as I will get to spend a year in the UK.On top of that, I was given plenty of opportunities to take up leadershiproles within the university. One of them was my appointment as theVice President of Scholars’ Orientation Camp, where I led a team of30 other students to organise the event. I also had the chance toorganise a five-day-four-night adventure camp to Terengganu for 30hearing-impaired individuals when I was with the Welfare ServicesClub. Indeed, there has never been a dull day throughout myuniversity years.NTU has taught me to explore beyond books and curriculum, to honean inquisitive mind, and to take control of my learning and life goals. To put it simply, I am proud to be an NTU graduate!
