Seats and Seat ControlsD To move the whole seat forward or rearward, slideThis section tells you about the power seats -- how toadjust them, and also about the reclining front seatbacks, lumbar adjustments, head restraints, heated seats andseatback latches.Power Lumbar Control (Option)Power SeatsThe power seat controls are located on the outboard sideof the front seat cushion.D Move the front of the control in the direction of thearrows to adjust the front portion of the cushion upor down.D Move the rear of the control in the direction of the arrowsto adjust the rear portion of the cushion up or down.D Lift up or push down on both outer arrows at thesame time to move the entire seat up or down.1-2the control in the direction of the center arrow. If you have this option, thedriver’s and passenger’sseatback lumbar support canbe adjusted four ways bymoving the single switchlocated on the outboard sideof the seat.To increase or decrease support, hold the switch forwardor rearward. To move the lumbar up and down, hold theswitch upward or downward.Keep in mind that as your seating position changes, as itmay during long trips, so should the position of yourlumbar support. Adjust the seat as needed. If you have the optional personalization package, thepower lumbar control can be programmed for memoryrecall. For more information, see “Memory andPersonalization Features” in the Index.

Massaging Lumbar (If Equipped)Push the power lumbar control up for half a second toactivate the massage feature. The massage cycle will runfor 10 minutes. The cycle can be interrupted by pushingthe lumbar control down and holding for not more thanhalf a second. The cycle will continue to run even if theignition is turned to OFF. The lumbar support can beadjusted during the massage cycle by moving the switchforward to increase support and rearward todecrease support.Memory Seat and Mirrors (If Equipped)Automatic seat and mirror movement will occur if theRemote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is used toenter the vehicle. The number on the back of thetransmitter corresponds to the 1 or 2 seat and mirrorposition. After the unlock button is pressed on the RKEtransmitter (the ignition must be in LOCK) or when thekey is placed in the ignition, the seat and mirrors willautomatically adjust to the appropriate position.Heated Front Seat (Option)The control is located in thecenter console. Move theswitch to LO or HI to turnon the heating elements inthe seat. The LO settingwarms the seatback andcushion until the seatapproximates bodytemperature. The HI settingheats the seat to a slightlyhigher temperature.A telltale light in the control reminds you that theheating system is in use. The heated seats can only beused when the ignition is turned on.Automatic seat and mirror movement is programmedthrough the Driver Information Center (DIC) so that thedriver can select whether or not movement will occurusing the RKE transmitter or by placing the ignition keyin the ignition. For programming information, see“Memory and Personalization Features” in the Index.1-3

Reclining Front SeatbacksThe reclining front seatbackcontrol is located on theoutboard side of each frontseat. Press the controlforward or rearward toadjust the seatback. But don’t have a seatback reclined if your vehicleis moving.1-4

Seatback LatchesCAUTION:Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle isin motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckleup, your safety belts can’t do their job whenyou’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job. In a crash youcould go into it, receiving neck or other injuries. The lap belt can’t do its job either. In a crash thebelt could go up over your abdomen. The beltforces would be there, not at your pelvic bones. This could cause serious internal injuries. For proper protection when the vehicle is inmotion, have the seatback upright. Then sitwell back in the seat and wear your safetybelt properly.CAUTION:If the seatback isn’t locked, it could moveforward in a sudden stop or crash. That couldcause injury to the person sitting there. Alwayspress rearward on the seatback to be sure itis locked. The front seatback foldsforward to let people getinto the rear seat. Theseatback will move backand forth freely unless youcome to a sudden stop, thenit will lock into place.Head RestraintsSlide the head restraint up or down so that the top of therestraint is closest to the top of your ears. This positionreduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash. The head restraints tilt forward and rearward also.1-5

The seatback may not fold without some help from youif your vehicle is parked going down a fairly steep hill.In this case, push the seatback toward the rear as you liftthe latch. Then the seatback will fold forward. The latchmust be down for the seat to work properly.Safety Belts: They’re for EveryoneThis part of the manual tells you how to use safety beltsproperly. It also tells you some things you should not dowith safety belts. And it explains the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint(SIR), or air bag system.CAUTION:Don’t let anyone ride where he or she can’t weara safety belt properly. If you are in a crash andyou’re not wearing a safety belt, your injuriescan be much worse. You can hit things inside thevehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriouslyinjured or killed. In the same crash, you mightnot be if you are buckled up. Always fasten yoursafety belt, and check that your passengers’ beltsare fastened properly too.1-6CAUTION:It is extremely dangerous to ride in a cargo area, inside or outside of a vehicle. In a collision, people riding in these areas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed. Do not allow people toride in any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and safety belts. Be sureeveryone in your vehicle is in a seat and using asafety belt properly.Your vehicle has a light thatcomes on as a reminder tobuckle up. (See “SafetyBelt Reminder Light” inthe Index.)

In most states and Canadian provinces, the law says towear safety belts. Here’s why: They work. You never know if you’ll be in a crash. If you do have acrash, you don’t know if it will be a bad one.Why Safety Belts WorkWhen you ride in or on anything, you go as fast asit goes.A few crashes are mild, and some crashes can be soserious that even buckled up a person wouldn’t survive. But most crashes are in between. In many of them, people who buckle up can survive and sometimes walkaway. Without belts they could have been badly hurtor killed. After more than 30 years of safety belts in vehicles, the facts are clear. In most crashes buckling up doesmatter . a lot!Take the simplest vehicle. Suppose it’s just a seaton wheels.1-7

Put someone on it.1-8Get it up to speed. Then stop the vehicle. The riderdoesn’t stop.

The person keeps going until stopped by something.or the instrument panel .In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield .1-9

Here Are Questions Many People AskAbout Safety Belts -- and the AnswersQ: Won’t I be trapped in the vehicle after anaccident if I’m wearing a safety belt?or the safety belts! With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That’s whysafety belts make such good sense.1-10A:You could be -- whether you’re wearing a safetybelt or not. But you can unbuckle a safety belt, even if you’re upside down. And your chance ofbeing conscious during and after an accident, soyou can unbuckle and get out, is much greater ifyou are belted.Q:If my vehicle has air bags, why should I have towear safety belts?A:Air bags are in many vehicles today and will bein most of them in the future. But they aresupplemental systems only; so they work withsafety belts -- not instead of them. Every air bagsystem ever offered for sale has required the use ofsafety belts. Even if you’re in a vehicle that has airbags, you still have to buckle up to get the mostprotection. That’s true not only in frontal collisions, but especially in side and other collisions.

Q:If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far fromhome, why should I wear safety belts?First, you’ll want to know which restraint systems yourvehicle has.A:You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in anaccident -- even one that isn’t your fault -- youand your passengers can be hurt. Being a gooddriver doesn’t protect you from things beyond yourcontrol, such as bad drivers. We’ll start with the driver position.Driver PositionMost accidents occur within 25 miles (40 km)of home. And the greatest number of seriousinjuries and deaths occur at speeds of less than40 mph (65 km/h).it properly.Safety belts are for everyone. This part describes the driver’s restraint system.Lap-Shoulder BeltThe driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear1. Close and lock the door.2. Adjust the seat (to see how, see “Seats” in the Index)so you can sit up straight. How to Wear Safety Belts ProperlyAdultsThis part is only for people of adult size.Be aware that there are special things to know aboutsafety belts and children. And there are different rulesfor smaller children and babies. If a child will be ridingin your vehicle, see the part of this manual called“Children.” Follow those rules for everyone’s protection.1-11

3. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you.Don’t let it get twisted.4. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks.Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety BeltExtender” at the end of this section.Make sure the release button on the buckle ispositioned so you would be able to unbuckle thesafety belt quickly if you ever had to.1-12The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snugon the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, thisapplies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d beless likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it,the belt would apply force at your abdomen. This couldcause serious or even fatal injuries. The shoulder beltshould go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take beltrestraining forces. The safety belt locks if there’s a sudden stop or crash.

Shoulder Belt Tightness AdjustmentYour car has a shoulder belt tightness adjustmentfeature. If the shoulder belt seems too tight, adjust itbefore you begin to drive.4. Let the belt go back all the way. You should hear aslight clicking sound. If you don’t, the adjustmentfeature won’t set, and you’ll have to start again.1. Sit well back in the seat.2. Start pulling the shoulder belt out.5. Now you can add a small amount of slack. Leanforward slightly, then sit back. If you’ve added morethan 1 inch (25 mm) of slack, pull the shoulder beltout as you did before and start again.3. Just before it reaches the end, give it a quick pull.If you move around in the vehicle enough, pull out theshoulder belt, or open your door, the belt will becometight again. If this happens, you can reset it.1-13

Q:What’s wrong with this?CAUTION:You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt istoo loose. In a crash, you would move forwardtoo much, which could increase injury. Theshoulder belt should fit against your body.Don’t allow more than 1 inch (25 mm) of slack.A:The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearlyas much protection this way.1-14

Q:What’s wrong with this?CAUTION:You can be seriously injured if your belt isbuckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at thepelvic bones. This could cause serious internalinjuries. Always buckle your belt into the bucklenearest you.A:The belt is buckled in the wrong place.1-15

Q:What’s wrong with this?CAUTION:You can be seriously injured if you wear theshoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, yourbody would move too far forward, which wouldincrease the chance of head and neck injury. Also, the belt would apply too much force to theribs, which aren’t as strong as shoulder bones. You could also severely injure internal organslike your liver or spleen.A:The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It shouldbe worn over the shoulder at all times.1-16

Q:What’s wrong with this?CAUTION:You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. Ina crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of thebelt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or askyour dealer to fix it.A:The belt is twisted across the body.1-17

Safety Belt Use During PregnancySafety belts work for everyone, including pregnantwomen. Like all occupants, they are more likely to beseriously injured if they don’t wear safety belts. To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt shoul
