Pastor’s CornerData & InfoOne year in! Let’s review Pr. Chad“It was he who “gave gifts to people”; he appointed some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, others to be pastors and teachers. He did this to prepare all God's people for the work of Christian service,in order to build up the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-12 GNTI cannot believe it but it’s true. October marks my twelfth month sincearriving at St. Paul’s. That means we have been together as Pastor and congregation for one year. It’s been a great year as far as I am concerned, andI’ve really enjoyed getting to know and serve alongside all of you. I’ve alsobeen amazed by all the members of St. Paul’s who use their gifts to build upthe body of Christ in this place. I thought it might be good to review with youmy understanding of the gift God has given me to be a Pastor and how thatgifting serves you (as you have served me and one another this past year) sothat we can look forward to another year growing together in our vocations. As your Pastor, I am here to serve God and you, His people. I do thismainly through the public preaching and teaching of God’s Word, but also bybeing a spiritual counselor to each of you individually. If you want to talk tome about any problem or need, please feel free to call on me. If you need tomeet for Confession and Absolution don’t hesitate to call on me. My office isat the church, but I am available to serve your spiritual needs anywhere atany time. If I am not in my office at a particular time, please leave a message. You may also call me on my cell phone, if necessary. All told, I am occupiedwith my Pastoral duties between fifty & sixty hours each week. But becauseof the varied nature of a Pastor’s work, it is not possible to set and adhere toan inflexible schedule. Generally, I make every effort to be in my office from1:30 PM to 4:30 PM Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. When I am not in my office, I am still your Pastor and still available toyou. In fact, I am your Pastor twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year, and so I may be called upon for anyemergency in which spiritual help, counsel or support is needed. Please donot hesitate to call the office or my cell phone at any time of the day or nightfor such an emergency. However, the Pastor cannot be in two places at thesame time, so do not become discouraged if I am not there to answer the telephone personally when you need me. Ordinarily it will not take long for meto get back to you. If I am out of town for any reason, either our AssociatePastor, Vicar, or one of the church elders will be available to you. Please notify me if you or someone in your immediate family is hospitalized. I will make every effort to visit members who are in the hospital. I donot usually visit people who are sick at home, unless I am specifically askedPage 2The Monthly StarThose Who Celebrate Their October Anniversaries6, 1979 Dan & Judy Stahl40 years6, 1979 Frank & Mary Jean Penksa40 years6, 1990 John & Kristy Hoerner29 years6, 1990 Robert & Sharon Posenjak29 years10, 2003 Jay & Rebecca Aldinger16 years11, 1997 David & Judy Wieserner22 years12, 2001 William & Norma Daley18 years15, 2004 Anthony & Stacy Rotino15 years16, 1976 Paul & Betty Steff43 years17, 1964 Lawrence & Judy Dietz55 years19, 1974 Gar & MaraLynn Adams45 years23, 1965 Vern & Diane Hopkins53 years25, 1958 James & Joan Brooks, Sr.61 years27, 1984 Vernon & Nancy Frost35 years28, 1983 Scott & Kirsten Chase36 yearsChurch ContactsPastor: Chad Kyler716.652.9197980.330.2725 (cell)Pastor.ckyler@gmail.comOffice Hours: Tues, Wed & Thurs 1-4:30Associate Pastor: Ron Hager716.652.5977Vicar: Dan Stahl716.861.2706Church Secretary & Calendar Questions: Chantal Riehle716.984.0049Choir Director: Bob Posenjak716.698.5363President: Bob Riehle716.912.0249Sunday School Superintendent: Marsha WelshansChurch e-mail: office@saintpaulschurch.comWeb Site: saintpaulschurch.comOctober 2019Page 19

In addition, any member who is “shut-in” because ofchronic illness or due to being elderly will be visited regularly by myself, adeacon, or a Stephen Minister.I should be contacted as soon as possible when a member has decided to getmarried. Young people especially are encouraged to consult with their Pastoreven before making such a decision, but once the decision is made, if thewedding is to be at our church, they will need to reserve the date and schedule a couple of premarital meetings with me to discuss the wedding and themeaning of marriage.Similarly, if you desire to schedule a Baptism please contact me as soonas possible. We use a Baptismal Request form that is available on our website, however, if you speak to me after church some Sunday or call me on thephone, we can generally review available dates on the church calendar andconfirm a date for you then. Finally, when a member of the congregation is called to their eternal restby the Lord, I should be notified immediately. Everyone is situated in their newclasses. There are several new faces inour Nursery class, being led by CarolHappy, and her helper Trynal. They are Aurora and Daniel,Liam, and Jeffrey, and Sophia. So glad we are filling upthe nursery. Each class has a butterfly habitat in theirrooms with 5 caterpillars in each one. Our new curriculum started with creation so we thought this would be agood way to show the kids Gods work through the butterflies. With any luck the caterpillars will all transform atthe same time and we can all go outside to release themthis Sunday. This replaces our balloon release. Staytuned for butterfly news next month. Please keep ourSunday in your prayers. Has your family had this samediscussion? It has always been my understanding that theX’s represent kisses and the O’s represent hugs. Recentlyduring the Bills win against the Bengals this discussioncame up. Only Fiona agreed with me. So of course I wentto Wikipedia. I was enlightened by what I found. The common custom of placing "X" on envelopes, notes and at thebottom of letters to mean kisses dates back to the Middle Ages, when aChristian cross was drawn on documents or letters to mean sincerity, faith, and honesty.[1] A kiss was then placed upon the cross, by the signer as adisplay of their sworn oath. It was also used in early Christian history asmuch of a display of the same.Since most of the common people could not read or write, the 'X' wasplaced on documents, and a kiss was placed over it as a show of their sincerity.[2] The Chi Rho, often represented with the letter 'X', was also usedas a holy symbol throughout Christian history as it represented the Greekword for Christ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ; this gave rise to the practice of using the letter'X', which was then kissed in this tradition of displaying a sacred oath.[1][3]There is speculation on the Internet from at least one original sourcethat the 'O' is of North American descent: when arriving in the UnitedStates, Jewish immigrants, most of whose first language was Yiddish, would use an 'O' to sign documents, thus not using the sign of the cross, and shop keepers would often use an 'O' when signing documents, in placeof an 'X'.Like the year, 2019 AD; many of the holidays we celebrate, this also is yetanother practice that reminds us to look toward Christ. Please know that Sunday school is sending you all lots of X’s and O’s that iskisses and hugs for all of your support and prayers over the years! We meanit with sincerity, faith and honesty. Please join me as I pray for our children, Dear Holy Father, thank you forour children. Thank you for our Sunday school. Thank you, Lord God for all ofyour blessings and love that you shower upon us all! We would like to givespecial thanks for the children who recently joined our Sunday school. DearJesus, we thank you for Aurora Adamczyk, Daniel Adamczyk, Ella Lanham andLiam Schinzel! Lord, guide us as we as a community in faith teaches these andall children about Your Great Love! We ask this in the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.October 2019Page 9
