3expect theunexpectedThe story of Prestonsburg, the first townestablished in eastern Kentucky, is one as oldas the mountains themselves. The year was1797 and a man by the name of John Grahamfrom Virginia surveyed the land that becamePrestonsburg. Graham’s vision of a settlementcalled Preston’s Station shaped the modernday spirit of our town. Brave, adventurousmen and women alike walked the footpaths ofthese mountains and paddled downstream inthe waters of the Levisa Fork River. They sawthe original elk herds and hunted these forests.Follow the path of the elk.Walk the winding trails of the NativeAmericans who lived and hunted here.Explore the rugged, wild beauty that convincedearly settlers to make a home here.Move your feet to the mountain music thatdefines our state. What story will themountains share with you?#feeltheburgTHE STAR CITY OF EASTERN KENTUCKYPrestonsburg is the Star City ofEastern Kentucky and truly a jewelin the heart of the Appalachianmountains.PRESTONSBURGKY.ORGJOIN US FOR AN EASTERNKENTUCKY ADVENTURE

HISTORY15BPRESTONSBURGKY.ORGPRESTONSBURG CELEBRATES HISTORYTHROUGH LANDMARK PRESERVATIONecause Prestonsburg was the first town in easternKentucky, it’s only natural that its ties to importantevents in American history run deep.THE STAR CITY OF EASTERN KENTUCKYJohn James Floyd was only about 32 years old when hewas fatally wounded during an ambush by NativeAmericans. Though he was young, the namesake of FloydCounty made the most of his time as a surveyor, militiaman and adventurer — he was a part of the rescue partyfor Daniel Boone’s daughter, who was kidnapped by alocal Indian tribe. Soon after, he became the county’s firstappointed judge.THE SAMUEL MAY HOUSESamuel May was born and raised in Virginia by the sonof a Revolutionary war veteran. He moved his familyhere and soon after built the family home in 1818.Workers gathered hand-hewn logs from the surroundingforests, molded Kentucky clay bricks on-site, and groundfreshwater mussel shells out of the Levisa Fork River intolime. This house is significant not only for its exceptionalFederal craftsmanship but also because its owners andtheir families played major roles in the development ofPrestonsburg and Floyd County.Samuel was an ambitious businessman and instrumental inthe construction of the Mt. Sterling-Pound Gap Road, whichpaved the way for increased commerce to the area.In its heyday, this home was a social and political hubsurrounded by almost 400 acres of land. By the 1830s,May became a state representative and went on to be asenator. It was from the balcony of his home that May is saidto have delivered political speeches to citizens gathered onthe lawn of the house, while in the meadow below he hostedhorse races at his own personal racetrack.1035 North Lake Drive, Prestonsburg, KY 41653(606) 886-1341 // mayhouse.orgrelive the storiesof our settlersWEST PRESTONSBURG BRIDGEOur most recognizable landmark is the West PrestonsburgBridge, built in 1928. It is the last of two rainbow arch bridgesleft in the county. Designed by a Floyd County engineer,it reaches gracefully across the breadth of the Big SandyRiver. Plans are currently underway to give it new life as apedestrian bridge. Looking out across the water, you canimagine what an impact this bridge made — it opened up awhole new world beyond the Big Sandy.Look east. There’s amovement going on.#myeastkyreborn

HISTORYSamuel May’s son, Captain Andrew Jackson May, trained hisConfederate infantry, staging military drills on the family’smeadow racetrack. The skirmish lasted approximately anhour and a half.
