Both networks are connected to the data link connector (DLC). This makes diagnosis and testing ofthese systems easier by allowing one diagnostic tester to be able to diagnose and control any module on thenetworks from one connector. The DLC can be found under the instrument d2a9-fbfaca7ae299?returnPath %2Fcar%2Ff1 1/19

10/12/2017Module Communications Network - Communications Network - Diagnosis and Testing 2005 Ford Focus MotoLogicThe ISO 9141 communications network does not permit inter-module communication. When the diagnostic toolcommunicates with the generic electronic module (GEM) on the ISO 9141 communication network, thediagnostic tool must request all information or initiate module commands. The GEM is the only module on the ISO 9141 communications network. The ISO 9141 communications network will not function if the wire is shorted to ground or battery voltage. Also, ifthe GEM loses power or shorts internally, ISO 9141 communications will fail. The CAN network will remain operational even with the severing of one of the bus wires. If one of the CANnetwork bus wires becomes shorted to ground or voltage, communications can continue at a reduced level. Ifany of the termination resistors are lost, communication will not be possible.Powertrain Control Module (PCM)The PCM is on the CAN network. The PCM controls the engine for better fuel economy, emissions control, andfailure mode detection and storage. For additional information, refer to the Powertrain Control/EmissionsDiagnosis (PC/ED) manual.Restraints Control Module (RCM)The RCM controls the deployment of the air bags based on sensor input. The RCM is on the CAN network. TheRCM communicates with the occupant classification sensor using the CAN network. The occupant classificationsensor does not communicate with the diagnostic tool, and is mentioned here as a possible concern should CANnetwork communication be lost. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B.Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) ModuleThe anti-lock brake system (ABS) module is connected to the CAN network. The ABS module with stability assistis also connected to the CAN network. The ABS module controls the brake pressure to the four wheels to keepthe vehicle under control while braking. For additional information, refer to Section 206-09.Instrument ClusterThe instrument cluster is connected to the CAN network. The instrument cluster displays driver information, including tachometer reading, fuel level, engine coolant level and speed. For additional information, refer toSection 413-01.Occupant Classification SensorThe occupant classification sensor is connected to the CAN network. The occupant classification sensor islocated in the passenger seat and is used to determine whether or not to deploy an airbag based on the weightdetected in the passenger seat. The occupant classification sensor communicates on the CAN network to theRCM only. Diagnosis is carried out through the a9-fbfaca7ae299?returnPath %2Fcar%2Ff1 2/19

10/12/2017Module Communications Network - Communications Network - Diagnosis and Testing 2005 Ford Focus MotoLogicGeneric Electronic Module (GEM)The GEM is on the ISO 9141 communications network. The GEM controls a variety of systems:windshield wiperswarning chimesinterior lampsexterior lampspower windowssecurityFor additional GEM information, refer to Section 419-10.Inspection and Verification1. Verify the customer concern.2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.Visual Inspection ChartElectricalCentral junction box (CJB) fuse(s):63 (20A)48 (10A)32 (15A)Wiring harnessLoose or corroded connector(s)Damaged connector(s)3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) beforeproceeding to the next step.4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select thevehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate withthe vehicle:check that the program card is correctly installed.check the connections to the vehicle.check the ignition switch 2a-d2a9-fbfaca7ae299?returnPath %2Fcar%2Ff1 3/19
