Next GenerationNCLEX UpdateSPRING 2021THE LATEST NGN UPDATESNext Generation NCLEX (NGN) Live Event –What You Should Know Standalone items will include similar client care recordtabs with information regarding the question, but therewill be a single test item monitoring aspects of clinicaljudgment compared to the unfolding case study. The new scoring model will have polytomous scoringwith partial credit given to nursing candidates toaccommodate a more precise measurement for thenew item types. This also reduces the impact of randomguessing. The partial credit varies among the differentitem types. To prepare students for the NGN, Donna Ignatavicius andLinda Silvestri suggest three phases: 1) focus on clinicaljudgment, 2) introduction to the new NGN test items, and 3) readiness for the NGN.The (NGN) is coming, bringing a change to the way the testis designed. Although there is time before the new exam rollsout (no sooner than April 2023), this is a looming change fornursing programs to focus more on clinical judgment and newtest items, and preparation for this change needs to be takensooner, rather than later. On Monday, March 15, Elsevier hosted an NGN digital eventwith a variety of key NGN players, including NCSBN’s ChiefOperating Officer, Phil Dickison, Elsevier authors, DonnaIgnatavicius and Linda Silvestri, and Elsevier’s Director for HESIContent Operations, Donna Spivey, giving faculty insights intonew test updates and how they can plan ahead in their courses. Here are some of the key takeaways from the event:Updates from the NCSBN To bring clinical judgment to the forefront of simulationand clinical lab, faculty should focus on how studentsthink through their decision-making process, in additionto whether they did the right thing in the given clinicalscenario. Regarding NCLEX pass rates, students who are takingminimum-length exams and passing are doing well withclinical judgment based on the special research section. Those who are taking the maximum-length exam will bethe most impacted by the NGN. Click here to read more key takeaways andview the recording. Unfolding case studies will include six items in a case, with a rendition of a client care record that provides dataas the basis for the questions. Item types are associatedwith the six cognitive skills outlined in Layer 3 of theNCSBN Nursing Clinical Judgment Measurement Model(NCJMM) tested in these case studies.myevolve.us/NGNCLEX2
