This is an exceptional opportunity for an executive to lead the transformation of human resources practices, structure, culture and programming over the next several years. A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and a recently named flagship of the State University of New York (SUNY) System, Stony Brook is one of America’s most dynamic public universities. Established in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of mathematics and science, Stony Brook is now recognized as one of the nation’s important centers of learning and scholarship. The university is dedicated to carrying out the mandate given by the State Board of Regents in 1960 to become a university that would “stand with the finest in the country.” Recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best-in-State Employers and as an institution that provides exemplary employment opportunities on Long Island and in New York State, the university is also ranked on the 2022 America’s Best Employers for Diversity Forbes list and has been ranked the #1 public university in New York State. HR NOW, a collaborative campus initiative, was established with the aim to enhance the employee experience and positioning the university for future success through improved HR systems and practices. Identify and implement continuous improvement principles to offer creative and innovative HR solutions. Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership Beyond the day-to-day leadership of a complex organization, the VPHR will be asked to address several strategic areas, including: Advance the HR NOW transformation initiative. With workforce issues becoming increasingly more critical to the university, Stony Brook's leadership has recognized that investing in programs and services to recruit, support, develop and retain Stony Brook employees is a priority. In late 2019 the university engaged Segal Consulting in order to gain the benefits of an independent perspective on leading HR best practices in higher education. Segal was tasked to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the West Campus (academic) human resources function to understand and identify areas of strengths and opportunities for improvement. While the HR assessment was paused during the pandemic, it was fully launched in early 2021 with the goal of providing the university with an objective review of the overall effectiveness, efficiency and quality of HR services and programs. Hundreds of stakeholders across the institution offered feedback which resulted in a comprehensive set of findings. This includes a gap analysis and a road map with detailed recommendations for leveraging strengths and opportunities in order to improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of HR, and ultimately building a best-in-class HR operation, organization and culture that is prepared to meet these unprecedented workforce demands and challenges of the future. As a result of the assessment findings, a collaborative campus initiative entitled HR NOW was established to enhance the employee experience and position the university for future success through improved HR systems and practices. An HR NOW steering committee was formed in June of 2022 to determine the best approach for modernizing the HR service delivery model for the faculty and staff of 4

Stony Brook University Vice President for Human Resources tomorrow. The team represents a diverse variety of campus offices, organizations and employees — all working in a transparent, collaborative and inclusive way to help build Stony Brook's work future. The VPHR, together with the steering committee, will assess the recommendations of the team and oversee the design and roll-out of new practices and programs. The VPHR will not only be accountable for ensuring its smooth implementation, but also for demonstrating to HR's customers and stakeholders the benefits of a much more coordinated approach to the structure and logical deployment of HR resources. As these consistencies are achieved, they will begin to eliminate inefficiencies and free up much-need resources for allocation to other key strategic investments. More information about HR NOW can be found here. Unify Stony Brook's human resources function under a shared vision and develop a common mission and strategy to achieve this vision. Stony Brook continues to invest in its human resources infrastructure of people, processes and technologies. These resources are deployed both centrally (under the Office of Human Resources) and through business partners within a number of academic and administrative units. As the HR business partner model continues to build out, it must be done so in a way that fully optimizes the impact of the collective power and expertise of HR and aligns all HR staff under common priorities and practices. The new VPHR will be expected to evaluate the current structure with HR NOW's goal of more effectively unifying the HR staff (central and units) through building a common culture and more consistent and efficient approaches. While recognizing the differences in the HR needs and clients across Stony Brook, the VPHR will work to reduce the possibility of duplications and inconsistencies in practices, policies and resources. To accomplish this, the VPHR should work closely with central and unit colleagues to demonstrate the benefits of a more coordinated and logical approach to the structure and deployment of HR resources. These efforts will be deemed as successful if the new VPHR is ultimately recognized on their merits as the acknowledged leader of all Stony Brook human resources – not just the central Office of Human Resources. Ensure that Stony Brook's HR practices are fully aligned to enable the recruitment and retention of world-class faculty and staff. Talent is Stony Brook's most valuable resource, and all current HR policies and practices should be focused on this goal. The key areas of accountability include recruitment, compensation, benefits, employee development, diversity, risk management and succession planning. The VPHR will bring a clear and solid understanding of human resources best practices and solutions and ensure that these contemporary practices are in place. The VPHR will adopt and implement these best practices throughout the organization and must constantly evaluate the HR organization’s function, purpose, structure, services and delivery models, and well as capabilities of the staff to ensure these practices are in place and unwavering. This leader will demonstrate data-infused decision making and be expected to apply metrics which establish a baseline for measuring progress, and serve to evaluate results and assess impact. The VPHR will be expected to possess – and share with university leadership – a full understanding of workforce 5

Stony Brook University Vice President for Human Resources trends including succession needs, leadership readiness, training, promotions, turnover and staffing metrics, all of which will inform organizational innovation and investments. Continue to build a culture in Stony Brook's HR organization characterized by best practices, adherence to institutional values and high-performing employees. With the implementation of HR NOW, Stony Brook Human Resources is taking a very progressive step in serving the needs of the university. Complementing this initiative, the VPHR should focus on continuing to build an organizational culture characterized by increased flexibility, customer service and a strategic orientation. This will be accomplished by engaging all employees to identify ways in which they can provide added value to all Stony Brook customers and continuously working to improve the quality of human resources services and delivery. The VPHR must ensure the organization is well-served with practices that ensure the recruitment, development and retention of top-caliber – and diverse – HR professionals. Finally, the VPHR should bring a personal leadership style that shows a high respect for each employee and their value to the organization. One pending “enabler” of this goal will be Stony Brook's upcoming implementation of a new enterpriselevel software platform for human resources and financial management (upgrading the current Peoplesoft environment to PeopleSoft 9.2 Oracle Cloud Infrastructure). This conversion will require a significant and aggressive re-engineering of the university’s HR practices. Professional Qualifications and Personal Qualities The successful candidate must have a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities present at a large and complex unionized organization; a commitment to human development and collaboration; and an enthusiasm for advancing Stony Brook's human capital and organizational effectiveness. In addition, ideal candidates will possess the following: Leadership and Vision Ability to develop a clear vision and strategy consistent with the university’s mission and best practices. Demonstrated leadership skills which result in the production of high-quality services and exceptional standards. Ability to solve problems and take risks while seamlessly working across the institution connecting with all key stakeholders. Capability of partnering with senior leadership and evidence of strategic thinking. A passion for customer service and the ability understand – and deliver on - the needs and expectations of all "clients" of HR services. A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all of its forms. 6

Stony Brook University Vice President for Human Resources Management Skills Ability to ensure that the human resources organization is run effectively, and systems and processes are consistent with policies. Financial acumen suitable to appreciating the university's business goals and the impact of HR practices and their attainment. An appreciation for the role of a university within a public system of higher education, and the importance of collaborating with system leadership for the good of both the campus and the overall enterprise. Communication and Collaboration Skills Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills that ensure a university-wide understanding of HR practices and availability of resources.
