Vintage, Antique Textiles & Passion for Fashion, Tue, 15 June 2021 10:001Dorset buttons, late 18th-early 19th century,comprising: blue haberdashery card of 36 'hightop' buttons, of conical shape worked in finelinen thread; together with a card applied with 72'Singleton' buttons (2)These buttons were made in Dorset somewherebetween the early 18th century and early 19thcentury. High Tops were first made inShaftsbury, Dorset between 1680 and 1700.They were made from a disc of horn from theDorset Horn sheep. It was covered by a smallpiece of linen and worked with a needle andthread to make a conical shaped button. Thesewere used on fashionable clothing from the late17th to early 18th century. They weresuperseded by “Singleton” buttons, which havewire rings covered with linen and tiny(microscopic!) stitching with French knots at thecentre which were commonly used on shirts,underwear and fine gowns. Dorset buttons wereousted by machine-made linen buttons from themid 19th century and almost overnight theDorset button industry was ruined.A substantial quantity of Dorset buttons becameredundant stock for well over 100 years untilbought by a wealthy Lady (the Dowager LadyLees) in the early 20th century, who tried torevive the industry at Lytchett Minster in Dorset.The small shop with its original antique stock ofbuttons was eventually bought in 1970 byThelma Johns who sold the buttons from TheOld Button Shop at Lytchett Minster. Thesebuttons were acquired from her in the 1980s.The original cards are of the best quality sold inEngland in the 18th/19th centuries mounted ondark blue card. Vintage, Antique Textiles & Passion for Fashion, Tue, 15 June 2021 10:0058A rare Boué Sœurs couture silk day dress,'Perlette', Spring-Summer 1930, unlabelled, ofthe palest seafoam-green, the weighted droppedwaistline with two appliquéd hearts ofembroidered muslin, adorned with finely-workedsilk ribbon rosebuds, the collar and cuffs of thesame, bust approx 86cm, 34inAfter 31 years, Boué Sœurs left their home at 9,Rue de la Paix in January 1930. In February, theSpring-Summer collection of that year was thefirst to be presented at their new establishmentat 73, Av. des Champs-Elysées.
