Reading Comprehension for Kindy KidsT e a ch e r’s N o te sIn Teacher’s Notes have Suggestion, egUse interesting sentence beginningsdirect speechvocabulary promptsthesaurus wordsdescriptive words (adjectives)Use better verbsUse adjectivesPaint your charactersSurprise endingWrite in the 1st person, 2nd, 3rd etcOne paragraph per ideaIntegration with other subject areas (ART?)PersonificationThese reading comprehension tasks are centred around topics of interest tochildren in the 4-6 year age group. Some of the stories are short (‘Anna’s New Bike’ has 40 words) while othersare much longer (‘The Ram and the Rainbow’ has 157 words). The passages are graded (in levels) according to how students are required toanswer the questions and there are 10 stories for each level.Level 1 *ring the best answer or write the missing word on the letter spacesLevel 2 **write the missing word on the lineLevel 3 *** write the answer as a full sentenceHow to Present the Passages in this BookThere is no single ‘correct’ way to treat these comprehension exercises.Every class has students with a range of reading abilities and these passages are intendedto accommodate that range. There is nothing to say that the whole class need work on the same passage concurrently. The teacher may choose to give the more able readers ‘The Ram and the Rainbow’,intermediate readers could work on ‘The Sun and the Moon’ while ‘Anna’s Pup’ could begiven to those whose reading levels are not so advanced.Alternatively, the teacher may choose to read a whole story to her class. If, say, ‘The Apple and the Banana’ was chosen, the lesson might go like this:1. Teacher reads story to class2. Teacher selects children to read story out aloud, one child reading one sentenceat a time. All the boys in the class could read the Apple’s talking parts while all thegirls could ‘be’ the Banana.3. Students write their answers on the page.Home StudyThese comprehension tasks are also ideal for home study.Children may read out aloud to their parents, roles could be reversed, or both.Competent readers will enjoy the satisfaction of completing the sheets with independence. Those requiring assistance with some of the words and/or the questions will benefit fromhaving a parent alongside for help and guidance.About the AuthorRon Shaw taught in primary schools for many years. He is the author of more than 40 books (used in many English-speaking countries) for primary school classes.NOTE: Should you be interested in a follow-up book to this one please email: intelligent.australia@yahoo.com Intelligent Australia Productions3
