April 2022PrefaceWe publish this report to fulfill data collection and dissemination responsibilities under the Federal EnergyAdministration Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-275), as amended. The Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) provides information about U.S. coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, quality, stocks, and refined coal data to a wide audience, including Congress, federal andstate agencies, the coal industry, and the general public. In addition, the QCR contains U.S. coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports data. The fourth-quarter 2021 QCR includes detailed quarterly coaldata for October 2021 to December 2021 and aggregated quarterly historical coal data for 2015 through fourthquarter 2021.All data for 2020 and previous years are final. All data for 2021 are preliminary.U.S. Energy Information Administration Quarterly Coal Report October–December 2021iii

Coal deposits are mined by cutting a network of 'roads' into the coal seam & leaving behind 'pillars' of coal to support the roof of the mine. These pillars can be up to 40% of the total coal in the seam - although this coal can sometimes be recovered at a later stage by 'retreat mining'.The roof is then allowed to collapse and the mine is
